ASTM D 698 - 91
‘TEST METHOD FOR LABORATORY COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS
OF SOIL USING STANDARD EFFORT
Scope
This test mthod covers the laboratory compaction procedures used to determine the relationship
between wfter content and dry unit weight of soils compacted in a 101.6 or 152.4 mm. diameter
mold with 24.4 N rammer dropped from a height of 305 mm producing a compacted effort of
600 kN-m/
This test mpthod applies only to soils that have 30 % or less by weight of particles retained on the
19 mm siege.
“Three altelnative procedures are provided. The procedure used shall be as indicated in the
specificatidn for the material being tested. If no procedure is specified, the choice should be
based on the material gradation.
Procedure A:
May be used if 20 % or less by weight of the material is retained on the 4.75 mm sieve. If this
procedure is not specified materials that meet these gradation requirements may be tested using
Procedur¢s B or C.
1.6 mm diameter
4.75 mm sieve
ProceduresB :
Shall-be used if more than 20 %-by weight-of the material is retained on the 4.75 mm sieve and
20 % or less by weight of the material is retained on the 9.5 mm sieve. If this procedure is not
specified, materials that meet these gradation requirements may be tested using Procedure C
Mold : 101.6 mm diameter
Material : Passing 9.5 mm sieve
Layers : Three
Blows per layer 25
Procedure C :
‘Shall be used if more than 20 % by weight of the material is retained on the 9.5 mm sieve and
less than 30 % by weight of the material is retained on the 19.0 mm sieve.
Mold : 152.4 mm diameter
Material : Passing 19.0 mm sieve
Layers : Three
Blows per layer : 56
“The 152.4 mm diameter mold shall not be used with procedure A or B.
“If the spacimen contains more than 5 % by weight oversize fraction and the material will not be
included; in the test, corrections must be made to the unit weight and water content of the
specimed or to the appropriate field in place density test specimen using Practice D 4718
“This test} method will generally produce a well defined maximum dry unit weight for non-free
draining|soils. If this test method is used for free draining soils the maximum unit weight may
not be well defined, and can be less than obtained using Test Methods D 4253.
ATDefinitions
Standard maximum dry unit weight (Yen) : the maximum value defined by the compaction curve
for a compaction test using standard effort.
‘Standard optinum water content (q,) : the water content, in percent, at which a soil can be
compacted to the maximum dry unit weight using standard compactive effort.
‘Apparatus
‘Molds : Moldsjhaving standard dimensions and accessories (refer original document for details).
Rammer : A rammer, either manually operated or mechanically operated with standard weight
and dimensions (refer original document for details)
Balance : A balance of | g readabi
Straightedge : fA stiff metal straightedge with a length not less than 254 mm.
Sieves : 19.0 nm, 9.5 mm, and 4.75 mm sieves conforming to the requirements of ASTM E 11.
Mixing tools : Miscellaneous tools such as mixing pan, spoon, trowel, spatula, ete.
Drying oven : An oven thermostatically controlled, preferably of the forced draft type, capable of
continuously maintaining a temperature of 110 + 5 °C throughout the drying chamber.
