Quiz No. 5: Carboxylic Acid and its Derivatives

Q1. Explain why acetic acid has an odor but benzoic acid does not.
Butyric acid has a rotten odor and has a substantially lower molecular weight and
greater vapor pressure (liquid at room temperature) (like rancid butter). Benzoic acid
has a larger molecular weight and a lower vapor pressure than acetic acid (solid at
room temp.)

Q2. Write the chemical equations for each of the 6 esterification reactions discussed.
Esterification refers to the chemical process that occurs during the creation of the ester.
