O Programa WASCAL apoia a formação acadêmica, com o objetivo de promover a capacitação

científica de jovens e definição de melhores políticas públicas para a preservação ambiental
no continente africano, em parceria com instituições parceiras locais e alemãs.
São disponibilizados 10 Programas de Doutoramento e 2 Programas de Mestrado para os
quais os candidatos estarão concorrendo também a uma Bolsa de Estudos.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES
PLEASE NOTE: Failure to comply with the following instructions will lead to the rejection of
the Application.
1. All the documents should be submitted in English language, with exception of the copies of
the university degree and transcript.
2. The application form (page 3 to 5) should be submitted in two versions. Version 1: a filled
electronic application form saved as a pdf document (PAY ATTENTION, “saved as” NOT
“printed as”). This can be saved in any pdf reader app or Microsoft Edge, NOT in Google
Chrome. Version 2: after filling the application form, print, sign, and scan as a pdf document.
3. All the documents must be signed, with exception of the Version 1 of the application
form.
4. The application documents must be attached to an electronic message to the following

address: wascalcv@uta.cv, and with copy to capacitybp@wascal.org.
5. At the electronic message write the subject title as “CCMS WASCAL Application”.
6. Each document must be attached individually and as a single document (separated pages
of the same document will NOT be accepted, and the application rejected.)
7. The file name of each document should be written as shown in the second column of the
table below, like as “document_yourlastname_yourfirstname”. For example, “trans_cert
_seidou_roland”;
8. If you have the national ID, for application, passport is not required.
9. The deadline for receipt of applications is June 30, 2021.

CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR THE SECOND BATCH OF MASTER’S STUDENTS
The Technical University of Atlantic is pleased to call for application for its Master’s
programme on Climate Change & Marine Sciences (MP-CCMS) under the West African
Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL).
WASCAL is a wholly West African international organization with focus on academic and
transdisciplinary research, building graduate-level scientific capacity and serving policy
makers in West Africa with science-based advice on adaptation to climate change impacts
and land use management. It cooperates with many agencies and universities in the region,
providing a knowledge platform of excellence for its partners. WASCAL is funded by the
Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of Germany and its 11 West African
member countries, namely: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali,
Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, The Gambia and Togo.
WASCAL’s mission is to provide information and knowledge services at the local, national
and regional levels to West African member countries to cope with the adverse impacts of
climate change. We do this through capacity building support to young West African scholars
in fields of climate, natural and social sciences and by strengthening the regional universities
to deliver climate and environmental services in member countries.
The Master’s programme on Climate Change & Marine Sciences of the Technical University
of Atlantic is implemented in close partnership with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for
Ocean Research Kiel, the University of Kiel and the Thünen Institute, as German partner
institutions and with the Institute of Sea (IMAR) as the Cabo Verdean partner institution. This
consortium is well suited to provide needed scientific and academic skills in climate, marine
sciences and management, both on an international and regional level in West Africa, in a
climate change context. The proposed Master´s programme will adequately prepare West
African students for subsequent post-graduate studies or professional careers as managers
or experts in industry, consultancy, governmental agencies, etc. Through the present call,
the Technical University of Atlantic is launching its second Master’s programme on Climate
Change & Marine Sciences for the 2020-2021 academic year, and scholarship
possibilities for at least 11 of the 22 selected students.

This programme includes:
o Four months of Language Proficiency courses in English Language for Francophones

and Lusophones at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana; and French Language for
Anglophones, at the University of Lome, Togo.
o Three semesters of joint Master courses related to marine sciences, coastal and
marine management and climate change at the Technical University of Atlantic
(including national and international lecturers).
o Shipboard training with a local research vessel and a German international research
vessel (availability and sponsoring pending) for training on ocean observation and
data collection for individual student research projects (field training and research
projects will be supported by the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo [OSCM]).
o Three weeks of scientific trip to the German partner institutions.
Scholarship and Research Support:
The scholarship and research support will be provided following the criteria below:
➢ Upon admission students will be required to maintain a graduate level Grade Point
Average (GPA) of B or a minimum of B from the course.
➢ During the course curriculum phase, students will be required to develop a detailed
research program, including budget, that will have to be accepted by his/her
committee, consisting of at least four graduate faculty members, and endorsed by the
Graduate Council.
• During the project/research stage, students are expected to present their progress
reports regularly and be evaluated accordingly.
Self-funded students will pay 1,500 Euro per year. The estimate cost for each self-funded
student is around 9,685 Euro and 6,960 Euro per first and second academic year,
respectively, excluding living expenses.
Eligibility conditions
Applicants are required to:
o Be citizen of a WASCAL member country (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte
d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo); other ECOWAS
member countries may be admitted without scholarship on an availability basis.
o Hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields or any other related fields:
Biological Sciences, Oceanography, Fishing or Livestock Engineering, Geography,
Sciences of the Atmosphere.
o Have at least an intermediate level in English language.
