What I Need to Know

Plants can be found in almost all parts of the world. They differ from one
another in many ways. Some plants are very small and other plants are very big.
Some have soft stems while other have hard stems.
Since plants differ from one another, they can be classified into groups.
These are trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers and creepers.
In this module, you will be able to understand and deal with plants. We are
surrounded by plants as living things. We will describe the parts of different kinds
of plant, observe plants in the environment, naming, and knowing their importance
to other living things.
In this module, it includes:
 Lesson 1: Classification of Plant
After going through this module, you are expected to:

Lesson

1 Plants

When you go to the garden, park or ricefield, you see many plants can be
found in almost all places. Some plants are very tall and slender, others are small
and wide. Somep plants have hard parts, others have soft parts. Some are flowering
plants, some fall on the ground. Plants are different but they are similar in some
ways.

With this, it is important to learn about the parts of different kinds of plant
and the importance of plants to human.

The external parts of different plants are roots, stem, leaves, flower and
fruits. The root is the plant that grows downward into the ground. The stem is the
plant part where leaves and flowers grow from. It is usually flat and green, but
could also have other shapes and colors. The flower is the most easily seen plant
part because of its color. It also the part that develops into a fruit.
Stems may be found above the ground, below the ground, or both above and
below the ground. Stems may grow straight up, trail along the ground, climb fences

7
and trees or stay underground. Trees grow up straight and have a main stem called
trunk. Shrubs are smaller than trees, but have multiple woody stems coming from
the same point instead of having a trunk. Shrubs also grow straight up. Examples
of shrubs are roses and santan plants. There are also plants with soft stem but
cannot grow straight up. Instead these plants creep on the ground or climb fences,
these plants are called vines. Examples of plants that creep on the ground or climb
fences are squash, camote, ampalaya, and upo.
The leaves of plants differ in shape, size, color and edges. Some leaves are
round oblong, or heart-shaped. There are leaves that are small such as anahaw
and banana leaves. There are leaves that are small such as carabao grass or
bermuda grass. Leaves also have different colors, but the most common is green.
There are plants with red, yellow, or violet leaves. Mayana is an example of a plant
that can have red, yellow, violet and green leaves depending on the variety. The
edges of leaves also vary from plant to plant. The leaf edge can be smooth or
toothed (serrated)
Flowers are usually the most beautiful part of the plant. There are flowers
with bright colors such as sunflower and gumamela. There are flowers with dull
colors such as the flowers of grasses. There are flowers that smell nice while some
have unpleasant smell. There are flowers that grow in cluster or group such as
santan , frangipani, and milflores . Depending on what you observed the plant and
how young the plant is, you may or may not observe flowers or fruits.
The flower is the part of the plant that develops into a fruit. Some fruits are
big such as jackfruit, watermelon and durian; while some are small like the aratelis,
duhat and kalamansi . Some fruits grow singly while others grow in cluster group
like lanzones and buko. Depending on your observations of the plants and how
young the plant is, you may or may not observe flowers or fruits.
The roots of the plants are usually under the ground to keep the plant firmly
in place. It absorbs water and minerals needed by the plant. The stem supports the
plants and holds the leaves. It carries water and minerals needed by the plant. The
stem supports the plant and hold the leaves. It carries water and minerals to other
parts of plants. The leaves makes food for plants . The flower develops into a fruit.
The fruit contains seed that can grow into new plant.
