Simple Future – Will


 “Will” is not followed by na infinitive with ‘to’
Examples :
 Robert will to go there .
 Sophie will to have to buy some pancakes.

 It concerns something that will exist or will have or will be in the future.
 The auxiliary modal verb that will be used will be will.
 Will is contracted ‘ll with subject pronoun .*
These contractions are common in both speaking and writing.
* Will is also often contracted with nouns in speaking ( but not in writing )
Written : Tom will be here at ten
Spoken : Tom’ll be here at ten
When two verbs are connected by preposition and , the auxiliar verb will is usually not
repeated..
Ex : I’ll lock the doors and turn out the lights.
* Will is not contracted with a pronoun in a short answer
 It is not various, so it can be used for both singular and plural people.
Examples :
 I’ll be fine, darling .
 Will you come to the party tomrrow afternoon ?
 Won’t she eat ?
 Francis will not visit us next year .

 There is never a final –s on will for future time

 It has the same form for both the singular and the plural.
Examples :
 I will travel to São Paulo next year.
 They will go to the beach the day after tomorrow .

 It has four verbal forms which are: affirmative or positive, negative, and two
interrogative : interrogative and negative interrogative.

♦ Affirmative Form

S + will + verb+ C.
Examples :
 She will buy a doll for me.
 They will play electric guitar next month.

♦ Negative Form
S + will + not + verb + C.
Examples :
 Jen will not quit before she reaches her goal.
 Make sure you arrive on time tomorrow because the bus will not wait for you.
 He will not say anything bad about his boss.
 I will not finish my homework in time for class.

♦ Interrogative

 What will you buy with the money you found?

 Long and Short answers

 Long Answers – We have to copy the rest of the question .


Examples :
 Will we paint some benches tomorrow afternoon ?Yes, we will paint some benches
tomorrow afternoon.
 Will Catherine start a new degree in Pittsburgh? No, she won’t begin a new degree
in Pittsburgh.
 Short Answers – We just say yes or no.
Examples :
 Will he keep his word to us ? Yes, he will .
 Will they become good doctors ? No, they won’t

Uses of Will

1) Notion of the future:


Examples :
 Our teacher will be absent next week.
 Juan will travel this month.

2) Prediction
I think, I hope, I believe that, through the English terms I think, I expect, I believe:

 We will probably have to wait for my parents.
 I think Victoria Beckham will come to Brazil in Carnaval.

3) Sudden decision:
Examples :
 Someone is shouting. I will see.
 I will take an apple.

4) Promise:
Examples :
 I will help you with your homework, don't worry.
 I will always love you.

5) Order:
Examples:
 Will you close the door, please?
 Will you go there with me? I don't want to go alone.

6) To express refusal:
Examples :
 I won't be able to help you.
 She won't leave you alone. Calm down!

7) Threat
Examples :
 If you say anything I will kill you!
 Study hard or you will fail.

 Give me all your money or you will die.

4) For a habit that is a predictable behaviour

Examples :

 My daughter will fall asleep as soon as she is put into bed.


 He will give up if he starts losing. He always does that.

5) We generally use "will" for prediction with the following verbs and phrases.
Believe , expect , hope , think , wonder , I’m sure , I’m afraid ...etc
Examples :
 I believe he will pass the exam.

 I hope he won’t leave us.

 I am afraid he will fail the exam.

 Do you think they will divorce?

6) We use "will" with the adverbs Perhaps, probably, certainly

*We do not use going to in this case.

Examples :
 Perhaps they will support you in the election.

 Jackson will probably go to London next year.

7) We use "will" to express promise, not going to

Examples :
 I will study medicine at university.

 I will stop going to the casino.

8) We use "will" in a question tag after imperative, not going to.

9) We use "will" to give an order or state our wishes, not be going to.

Examples:
 Will you turn on the lights?

10) We use Will to express a voluntary action

Examples:
 I will send you the information when I get it.
 I will translate the email, so Mr. Smith can read it.
 Will you help me move this heavy table?
 Will you make dinner?
 I will not do your homework for you.
 I won't do all the housework myself!
 A: I'm really hungry.
B: I'll make some sandwiches.
 A: I'm so tired. I'm about to fall asleep.
B: I'll get you some coffee.
 A: The phone is ringing.
B: I'll get it.

11) There is no future in time clauses

 When you arrive tonight, we will go out for dinner.

12) ADVERB PLACEMENT

13) ACTIVE / PASSIVE

Examples:
 John will finish the work by 5:00 PM. Active
 The work will be finished by 5:00 PM. Passive

14) To make predictions about the present.

Examples :
 Don’t phone her now, she’ll be busy.

15) To offer to do something.

Examples:

 I’ll take you to the airport tomorrow.


 That suitcase looks heavy, I’ll carry it for you.

16) To agree to do something.

Examples:

 Okay, I’ll come with you.
