● What do you remember about the HARF visit? 6 points

1. HARF stands for Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation and is located near
Waihe’e.

2. Their goal is to ensure these animals have the best lives possible, and to
adopt and not shop for pets.

3. They also encourage the spay/neuter action to unneutered and unspayed

pets.

4. HARF also wants to ensure these animals are treated with dignity, I
remember Kevin had an uncle who owned a barn and had a play-dog
treated as property, and when Kevin left, he put a bullet through the dog's
head.
5. HARF wants to get word out, despite coronavirus policies, to make us
pitch in ideas to news outlets like Mauinews or hawaii news now, they
have used to have their portable animal fence at the mall.

6. Finally, HARF puts 3 core values together without limits, Nature, Animals
and People together without boundaries and conditions.

● Write up story pitches (at least two) that will entice the local news (use the

Stewie, and/or HARF
o Pitch #1 10 points

In a time of terror and paranoia, many civilians, including their respective companies are
on high alert because of the incident which started at least 2 years ago. This remains
true for HARF, which is an animal rescue foundation which resided at the Supercentre
but later relocated to Waihe’e. However, the foundation still sets eyes on their primary
goal, to make animals ensure the best welfare in the county of Maui, are well
disciplined, and the company is tenacious when it comes to organizations which are
willing to cooperate with their end mission. The animals at HARF are animals who have
been through possibly a lot of neglect, and some are even born with disabilities. As a
student from a non-profit charter school, the organization is a perfect opportunity for
HARF to implement their solutions. Kihei Charter School is famous for it’s eco-friendly
programs and has been featured in multiple organizations and news outlets, so it’s only
natural they reach out to communities like HARF. People at Charter have the power to
create something that would mean the world to Stewie, a cart which is designed to
mobilize Stewie better. Mr. Hazlet, a supervisor who runs the Zone 1 section at Kihei
Charter has the complex tools and very likely the materials to build such a walker. Given
his measurements, students can build a walker easily in Zone 1. However, given the
vast chain of the Hawaiian Islands, we know Stewie isn’t alone when it comes to being
struck by misfortune. I remember meeting a poor canine who had fallen victim to a car
crash, and had one of his legs amputated. Based on my observations, we still have a
long way to go when we give these dogs grace and salvation. However, this doesn’t
mean we can stop now, we have to get large scale outlets aware of HARF’s presence.
Think of it as an opening ceremony at a regatta, we have to know we are strong and
tenacious. News sources like mauinews, and honolulunews are great examples of news
sources which have the capacity to understand HARF’s works and should make
headlines again like in August 29th of 2020. Putting out Stewie’s story can remind
ourselves we can make a difference in the community.
o Pitch #2 10 points

Many students at Kihei Charter School were fascinated by Stewie's presence. Many
wanted to hold stewie and pet him as this is one of the charming gifts HARF has to
offer. By adopting a little pouch, it can not only mean a lot to you, but means the world
to the pouch itself. Working with HARF has its long term benefits. You get a dog's
lifetime of affection and get to understand its feelings (animals have feelings, it's part of
treating animals with dignity) and you open the doors to new opportunities. Remember,
you're not only helping your ethical and moral values, you're aiding in the community.
Schools in Maui like Maui High and Baldwin High are famously known for their seminar
projects where students propose a driving question to essentially give back to the
school. Working with HARF now gives you more options on what to do when the current
Frosh and Soph students want to do when they are upperclassmen. Considering Maui
as a friendly community where everybody knows each other, it should be relatively easy
to turn the tide by persuading people to put their hard-headedness or whatever is
making them believe pet cruelty aside and follow what seems fit for optimal animal living
conditions. Releasing not only Stewie but other dogs who were either neglected (I
remember I had a pet named Bella who was really outgoing and was neglected by her
family) or disabled could make them realize they’re doing this all wrong and need to
reestablish their pet living habits. One idea I can propose is similar to how HARF once
resided at the Supercentre in Kahului. People should volunteer and practice good pet
habits to set a guideline for new pet owners on what they’re doing right and wrong.
Better yet, we should make animal walking advertisements for HARF. Some animals will
have a saddle on their back that reads a HARF advertisement. Of course, It may seem
strange at first, like some kind of billboard (no billboards in Hawaii!!!) or advertisement
that is usually ignored, but given the circumstances, who doesn’t appreciate a dog being
treated with utmost responsibility? While it seems nerve-racking for me, many of my
peers concentrate better in the learning environment than without a fluffy spiky
companion. Therefore, in the long run for HARF, it would be worth a try.

● Brainstorm on how to get HARF’s story out. Explain how to get the word out in
the community about HARF 4 points https://hawaiianimalrescue.org/

Despite all the milestones and how far HARF has come, (photovoltaic, reducing carbon
footprint, animal comfort stations, fencing) HARF could do better when it comes to
public outlets. While it may seem obvious to just go on social media and spread HARF’s
deeds like the bubonic plague, remember some people may be tourists which do not
live in Hawaii. You can put up posters, but be cautious about your wording. You want to
grab the viewer's attention. Don’t forget strength and progress comes in numbers, make
a team and work with others. Some people may walk past it at first, but some people
may look at it, meaning getting your stories out is starting to make a success.

● Stewie Cart 10 points

you can share them with classmates or Kevin Lauterbach)

The wheelchair I found supports not only bi-leg wheelchairs, but quad leg
wheelchairs. However, Stewie is missing his two front legs. THe overview for the
wheelchair can be created by rusty parts, spare shopping cart wheels, towels used for
straps, and even diapers for dogs. (Aslam, Shores, 2021) Though there could be other
resources like PVC pipes. Taking into account Stewie's measurements, THe framing of
the PVC piping should probably be ~17 in. length with the padded saddle roughly 8.5 in
(dividing the circumference of Stewie's torso by 2). The wheels should be secured with
both nuts and bolts after drilling holes in the piping. The harness should not be assisted
by Stewie's “hind shoulders”, as this could cause stewie to lose the wheelchair. Of
course, all of this depends on skill, but in the long run, it wouldn’t matter since teamwork
makes the dreamwork in the engineering shop space.
