COMPUTER NETWORKS

EXERCISES

Q1.SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS

1. What is networking?

Ans: Networking is a setup of computer networks for data communication. The Internet is the
biggest and most popular example of computer networking.

2. Define Network devices?

Ans: The devices which are used for communication between different hardware’s such as
hub, switch, routers used in a computer network are known as network devices.

3. Differentiate between LAN and WAN?

Ans: LAN ( Local Area Network)-is a network of two or more computers and peripheral
Devies within a small area like a room, office, group of buildings, schools or a college
campus. LANs enable communication within a range of 1 Km.

WAN ( Wide Area Network)-is a type of network covers a very large area ,often a country or
continent. This is normally used by the large organizations, whose offices are spread across the
country or in different countries.

4. Define a peer-to-peer network?

Ans: In a peer-to- peer network architecture ,all the nodes are connected to each other to
exchange information. There is no server in peer-to-peer network.

5. What is communication medium?

Ans: A communication medium is a channel required to transmit information between

computers.
Q2. LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS:

1. Write down the advantages of computer networks?

Ans: The major advantages of computer networks are:

a) Information and file sharing.

b) We can share resources such as printer, scanner, etc.

c) We can communicate efficiently with other user residing at different location.

d) We can store information and files on different computers and can share them as needed.

2. Explain client server architecture?

Ans: In a client server architecture, all the computer are connected to a centralized server which
controls the networks. The centralized computer acts as a hub and is called the server.
All the computers connected to the server are called clients. The server manages and provides
resources to the clients in the network.
3. Explain any three network topologies?

Anss: The three network topologies are:

a. Bus topology- In this topology, all the nodes are connected to a single cable. The cable acts
as backbone of the network.

b. Ring topology- In this topology, all the nodes are connected in a circular fashion. Each node is
directly connected to the adjacent node.

c. Star toplogy- In this toplogy, all the nodes are connected to a hub through cables. The hub
acts like a network server.
4. Explain the difference between wired and wireless medium.

Ans: Wired medium- this medium consists of cables and connectors i.e. computers in a network
are connected through wires and connectors. Wired media uses Twisted pair cables, Coaxial
cables and Optical fibre cables.
Wireless medium- this medium uses radio frequencies or microwave signals to transmit data
between network devices. Wireless medium uses Satellite communication, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and
WiMAX.
