Discussion Forum – Unit 1

Welcome to MATH1280.

Use the Discussion Forum to discuss your experience while installing or accessing
R.  If you have any tips, post them to the forum.  If you are having trouble installing
the R program, you may send a Moodle message to your instructor or post to the
course forum.  The R program that we will be downloading is around 60 MB (for the
Windows version), so if you have a slow Internet connection, it might take a long
time to download.

Note that there should be supplemental instructions for installing R on Mac OS X or

Linux. Check the Announcements forum or email your instructor if you do not find
those instructions.  You do not need the graphical client for Mac or Linux, but you
can experiment with it if you want to.

I use a MacBook Pro and needed to install “R for Mac”. Installing R on Mac OSX is
recommended to use the website of The Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN -
https://cran.r-project.org/). There is a dedicated section on how to install R for Mac OSX.
The following are the steps I took during the installation process.

1. Go to the website https://cran.r-project.org/

2. Select the link “Download R for macOS”
3. Download the latest installation package – the current latest version is “R-4.1.2.pkg”
which requires the macOS version of High Sierra and higher. As my macOS version is
Monterey, this works fine.
4. After downloading the installation package, I run the installer to install R for macOS

Additionally, I downloaded the RStudio from their website (https://www.rstudio.com/) and

installed on my machine.

The size of the R installer is 90.8 MB and the RStudio installer has a size of 204.1 MB. A total
of few minutes took for both to download onto my computer. The installation processes
and steps of both are clear and anyone with basic computer skills can handle the task.
