Prepare the airplane for control cable routing and control travel surface inspection by gaining access to all fight control system cables, pulleys and actuators. (Refer to Model 172 Series or Mode! 182 Sories 1996 And On Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27, Flight Controls.) (172R and 1828, all applicable serial numbers.) NOTE: Read the complete set of instructions before starting to accomplish them. Different steps within these instructions may require inspection andfor maintenance of areas common to other steps found later in the body of the instructions. ALL inspections andlor maintenance will bé performed for these common areas before closing the area. 2. Control Surfaces Travel_and Control Cable Routing Inspection (172R and 1628, all applicable serial numbers.) A Check al flight control, tim control and flap follow-up cable assemblies, pulley assemblies, and cable guard pin installations for routing and cable condition. (Refer to the Models 172R or 182S Series 1896 And On Illustrated Parts Catalog for component information.) Replace any worn or broken cables. Install and/or replace any missing, damaged, or incorrectly installed parts. In performing this general inspection, the following airplanes should also pay particular attention to the following items shown as applicabl (1) Elevator Trim Actuator Mounting Screws Inspection (17280001 thru 17280159 and 8260007 thru 18260029) (2) (Refer to Figure 2.) Inspect elevator trim actuator for loose mounting screws. 41 Using a flashlight and an inspection mirror, check the trim tab actuator clamps for loose or missing screws: NOTE: Refer to the appropriate 172R or 1828 Maintenance Manual chapter as called ut in each of the following steps. 2 Ifattach screws are missing: a Ensure they are not loose in the horizontal stabilizer before returning the airplane to service. Tap the underside of the horizontal stabilizer carefully to assist finding any loose screws or other debris. Remove all accessible debris in the horizontal stabilizer. ‘Take care not to damage the control surfaces. Replace any missing attach screws with ANS20-10R8 Screws (as required). Refer to Chapter 27, Elevator Trim Control - Maintenance Practices. Proceed to step stop 2.A.(1)(b). 8898-27-06 June 15, 1988 Page § Page 6 (2) @) (4) ) rere reer eee aE a Ensure actuator is in the correct position and tighten screws. (Refer to 172 Series 1886 And On Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27, Elevator Trim Control - Maintenance Practices.) b Proceed to step 2.A.(1)(b). 4 Ifattach screws are installed and are tight: a Proceed to step 2.A.(1)(b). Check travel of trim tab and adjust if-necessary. (Refer to Model 172 Series 1996 ‘And On Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27, Elevator Trim Control Maintenance Practices.) 172R Elevator Trim Tab Cable Inspection (17280001 thru 17280475) fa) Inspect the elevator tim tab cable routing: Ensure the pedestal cover is removed and retain attaching hardware. (Refer to Figures 4, Detail B, and Figure 5, Detail |) Inspect the forward chain to ensure that the cable connected to itis routed through the let pulley. a Ifthe forward chainicable is routed through the left pulley, move the trim wheel so that the forward chain moves down, which is the “nose down" ({a0 up) direction. Inspect the trim tab to ensure that it moves upward. i the trim tab reacts accordingly, proceed to Step 2.A.(3) or 2A.(4) as appropriate IF the contro! cable attached to the forward chain is not routed to the correct pulley, or the trim tab moves downward when adjusting the trim wheel “nose down", proceed to Step 2.A.(2)(a)3. (Reter to Figure 4, Detail B.) Disconnect the forward and aft chain-and-cable assemblies from the turnbuckle and remove the attaching hardware from the eyelet cisconnect. (Refer to Figure 6.) Remove both chain-and-cable assemblies and reroute as shown. Rig elevator trim tab control system. (Refer to the Model 172 Series 1996 And On Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27-31-00, Trim Tab Control Adjustment Test.) Move the trim wheel so that the forward chain/cable moves down, which is the “nose down” (tab up) direction, and inspect the trim tab to ensure that the tab moves in the upward position. ko Ic 8 172R Rudder Cable Inspection (17280001 thru 17280159) fa) (Refer to Figure 3.) inspect forward rudder cables for looseness in pulleys and installation of cable guard cotter pins: 1 Establish neutral position of rudder. (Refer to 172 Series 1996 And On Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27, Rudder Control Adjustment/Test.) 2 Ensure adequate access to all rudder control cables and pulley assemblies, 3 Inspect the rudder cables and pulleys to ensure the the cables are in the pulley grooves, 4 (Refer to Figure 3, Detail C and D.) Inspect to ensure there are cotter pins installed as cable guards. Install new cotter pins as cable guards if they are missing, 172R Aileron Crossover Cables inspection (17280001 thru 17280475) {a) (b) Ensure the cabin overhead console and headliner is removed to gain access to the aileron crossover cables. (Refer to Figure 6, Detail A.) Inspect the aileron cables where they pass near the flap crossover cable pulley bracket. The cables and the flap crossover cable pulley bracket assembly must not make contact. Inspect for drag marks on the bracket assembly to ensure there is no contact. 1 If there are drag marks indicating contact, inspect the condition of the cable(s) ‘making the contact. s898-27-06 June 15, 1998, Replace any cable that is worn or broken. (Refer to the Model 172 Series 1996 And On Maintenance Manual, Chapter 27-00-01, Control Cable Wire Breakage and Corrosion Limitations.) (Refer to Figure 6, Detail B, and View A-A.) Install phenolic strips over the flap crossover cable pulley bracket assembly using U000701 Sealant (part number EA9303) to keep the aileron cable from coming in contact with the bracket, : 2 I there are no drag marks indicating cohtact, proceed to Stop 2.8. B. Check the system cable tensions and flight control surface travels of the wing flaps, rudder, ailerons, elevator tim tab and elevator. Rig any fight control system not found to be within the specified limits as follows: (1) System Gable Tension Properties: (@) Models 172R : 4 Alleron Carry-Through Cable Tension 40 Pounds, + 10/-10 Pounds 2 — Rudder Cable Tension (Automatically determined by the tension of the return springs.
