Explain the process you need to follow to join two pieces of wood.

Make a schematic
drawing of the types of joints that appear in the mini-unit.

You can join it with wood glue, nails, and screws.

What is lathing? Draw a lathe and label the most important parts of it.
Lathing is a machining* operation performed using a machine called a lathe. It consists in
making the piece to be machined turn and tearing small particles off it using a cutting tool
until it achieves the desired shape. Machining is the set of operations performed on wood or
other materials that involve tearing away shavings.

What is milling? What is the name of the cutting tool in a milling machine?
Milling is a machining operation (it involves tearing off shavings) done using a machine
called a milling machine. There are many types of milling machines, which share the
basic operation of milling, which consists in using a rotating tool with cutting edges,
called a cutter which, upon turning, erodes the wood to give it the desired shape. By
changing the shape of the cutter, we can perform different operations on the wood:
making moldings (slats with a decorative profile), grooves, recesses, chamfers, etc.). For
complex projects or large series, there are computer-controlled milling machines (CNC
milling machines). In addition to wood, milling machines are also used to work metal,
even though these are more robust than those used for wood.

Which two finishes are usually given to wood? How are they different? What is
their function?
The most common finishes for wood are paint and varnish. They serve to cover wood to
protect it from external elements such as moisture, fungi or insects. They are also used to
improve its look, modifying its colour, tone or shine. Paint is a mixture of a pigment (the
substance that provides colour), a binder (the substance that holds the pigments) and a
solvent. When the solvent evaporates, the paint dries, leaving behind a protective coat over
the wood that also gives it colour. Varnish consists in transparent paint. It's made up of
resins (usually artificial, such as polyurethane) dissolved in a solvent. When the solvent
evaporates, a layer of resin that protects the wood is left behind. Varnish maintains the
natural look of wood, showing its veins and knots, even though it changes its tone and gives
it shine.
