● “The opportunity for significant and rapid acceleration in an individual’s ability to

deliver greater value in the future”, and we see drive as one of the key elements of

potential (Brittain, 2021). This statement is the author's definition of what he defines

leadership potential as. Drive is the main factor when it comes to having potential in

anything you do.

● You need to have the motivation and perseverance to consistently deliver in difficult and

ambiguous circumstances and take responsibility for achieving personal and

organizational goals (Brittain, 2021). The author is aiming for the first component of

drive. The first component is having a motivation to succeed in the workplace. You have

to have the NEED and WANT to be the best possible version of yourself so you can reach

your end goals.

● Not every person with potential has the desire to lead, and leaders are often identified on

capability without taking career ambition into account (Brittain, 2021). The second

component of the character dimension drive is career ambition. There are sometimes

going to be people with great potential but no desire to lead. Having both potential and a

want for the leadership role, is very important in the satisfaction of your role.
● The role of a leader requires great responsibility and ownership and potentially sacrifices

to work-life balance given the typical scale and intensity of the role. (Brittain, 2021) . A

leader needs to be able to balance their life at home and life at work. A leader needs to be

able to reach individual goals as well as attaining group goals at work. There are many

people who want to be leaders, but do not have the drive and capabilities to balance their

work life.

● Everyone has potential, but potential for what is the critical question. (Brittain, 2021). I

really love this quote because it shows us that everyone in this world has potential. We all

have potential to achieve what we want. But once there is potential, there needs to be

another step to achieve that potential and that is drive. We can be whatever we want to be

and reach any role but we need to be driven.

1. How does someone realize that they have the potential to be great? How do they

know that they can be successful?

2. The author mentioned that many people have the capabilities of being a leader but

are not willing to be a leader. Why do you think if someone has the potential, they

would not want to be a leader for a company or organization?
