What is an Orchestra?
A group of musicians who play together on a variety of
instruments that come from different instrument families.

Instrument Families
In an orchestra, instruments are placed into different “families” based on what they
use to make sound and what they look like. There are 4 main families.

Woodwind String

Air is buzzed into a
mouthpiece

What it looks like:


Made of brass,
twisted into different
shapes
Woodwind

How it makes sound:


Vibrating air across a
surface or between
surfaces, like a reed

What it looks like:


Long and tube-shaped
Strings
How it makes sound:
Strings vibrate by
being plucked or
played with a bow

What it looks like:


Usually made of wood
and have similar
shapes
Percussion
How it makes sound:
Being hit, shaken, or scraped

What it looks like:


Can be made of many different
materials, sometimes has mallets
or sticks
