The Daughter

Who Flew Through the Atmosphere & Into a State of Nature

(SATB Choir)

Music by Renato Goulart

Poem by Marci Vogel

Performance time: aprox. 5 min.

I started the composition of this piece during my period of artistic residence in the commune of Marnay-
sur-Seine (France) between October and November 2016, in fact a period dedicated to the composition
of a new work for symphony orchestra. However, I also had contact with the poet Marci Vogel, from Los
Angeles who presented me her poem "The Daughter Who Flew Through the Atmosfere & Into a State of
Nature". This work showed me forms and subtleties that could very well be represented through music,
which resulted in my second choral piece, a representation of the movements and sensations that the
poem itself suggests.

(notes by the composer)

Renato Goulart is a Bachelor of Music with a major in Saxophone from UFMG under the tutorship of Professor
Dilson Florêncio. He is the main composer and arranger of Monte Pascoal, which resulted in an album of his own
music and versions of well-known popular songs. His compositions and arrangements cover different levels and
formations, including music for saxophone, symphonic orchestra, symphonic band, choir, big band, etc. As an
arranger, Renato did work for people like Toninho Horta, Flávio Henrique, Célio Balona and others. He won the
first place in the National Composition Contest for Symphonic Band (2014) and was also the winner of a
competition of arrangements for traditional bands (2009). He was a finalist for the Festival Tinta Fresca,
promoted by the Philarmonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais, with the score “Três Momentos Sinfônicos” (2010). The
piece has been executed by several orchestras across the country and abroad, including the Orquestra Sinfônica
do Espírito Santo, Orquestra Sinfônica de Sergipe, Orquestra Sinfônica do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro,
Orquestra Sinfônica da Universidade de La Serena (Chile), Philharmonia Kalisca and Czestochowa Philharmonic
Symphony Orchestra (Poland). Nowadays, Renato frequently works as an instructor on festivals and workshops
dedicated to saxophone, orchestration and arrangement.

and essays have appeared in a number of publications, including FIELD, Plume, Jacket2, ZYZZYVA, Puerto del Sol,
Poet Lore, Colorado Review and Seneca Review. Awarded a 2014 Willis Barnstone Translation Prize, Vogel’s
writing has also earned recognition from the Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center, the Rona Jaffe Foundation,
the AWP Intro Journals Project, and the James Jones Literary Society. She has received invitations and
fellowships to share her work both nationally and internationally, including readings and talks at the San
Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, the University of Pennsylvania, the School of Beaux-Arts in Tours, France, and
the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Vogel recently organized a public reading at the Baldwin Hills Scenic
Overlook as part of a new program to bring poetry to California State Parks. She is currently at work on a new
collection of poems, several translation projects, and a hybrid manuscript based on the life and work of medieval
Francophone poet, Christine de Pizan. Before entering USC in the fall of 2012, Vogel taught for 22 years at a Los
Angeles nonprofit elementary school founded to include students with hearing loss.

The Daughter Who Flew Through the Atmosphere & Into a State of Nature

If she were in Ovid, she might be

a tree, not Daphne, but another

racing through a blue slit

in the sky. Up, up ̶ ̶

the houses, miniature

squares. The streets,

nowhere she need ever travel

again. Some tangles

turn to knots, their laces

undone. Here,

sweet mortal, feel

the stepping out of shoe

into limb, the rising, root,

the leafing.
