Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Identifying pronouns

Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 6th
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE6L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English
grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
a. Ensure that pronouns are in the proper case (subjective, objective, possessive)

Technology Standard Addressed: 1.1 Empowered Learner: Students leverage technology to take an active role
in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
1.3 Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct
knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☒ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☒ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson integrates the UDL principles of representation by using a response tool. Plickers is a resource that
can be used by both students and teachers to collect data on assessments. All students are represented
because they’re all submitting individual responses and therefore have an input on the tone and voice of the
classroom. Since the Plickers cards are physically held up in the air, this can engage physical learners as well
as other leaners to be more engaged in the content. Visual learners can also benefit from this activity as the
questions will be projected on the overhead screen.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The teacher will describe how to use the Plickers QR code answering system. The teacher will also lead a
cumulative review of the ELA standard pertaining to pronouns and their usage and classifications.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will be given a Plickers QR code to hold in their hands. Each side of the QR code corresponds with

either a b c or d. the teacher will then project the question on the board and give students ample time to hold
up the answer they feel is correct. Once the teacher scans the room with their mobile device, they will be able
to see which students answered correctly. For this lesson, the only materials needed will be the Clickers QR
code and the teacher’s mobile device used for scanning. The activity will last approximately 20-25 minutes.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
Students will get feedback at the very end of the activity after the teacher assesses the answer distribution.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the activity, the teacher will go back over the most missed questions and discuss correct answers. This
will also include referring back to and comparing with previous questions.
How will the data be used?
The data will be used as an ungraded progress check, but it will go in the gradebook as a participation grade.
The aggregate data will be shared with the students to clarify most missed questions or concepts.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity
I am experimenting with Student Response Tools for the first time. I hope to learn how to integrate
technology into my assessments and performance evaluations. Clickers is a very engaging resource that will
help students grasp the content better.
Reflective Practice:
I designed this as a mid-unit review to assess student progress. To further this activity, I could include an
additional worksheet or discussion to be competed in groups in order to make this activity more student-led.
One drawback of clickers is that it is teacher-led and does not allow for a lot of student discussion especially
when only using multiple choice questions.
