Business Description: Picongen enables wireless distribution of high bandwidth applications such as full resolution HDMI media and high-speed data transfers between multiple devices in the network (up to 3.9 Gbps), by creating a big pipe using industry standard physical layers with Picongen’s patented Multi-Streaming software. The business model is to license the software and IP for the all-digital Layer-3 system and provide reference designs for OEM customers. Opportunity: Limited bandwidth, limited range and reliability in wireless transmissions have long been a bottle neck for providing high bandwidth intensive wireless applications. Picongen solves the bandwidth problem by providing more than 10X increase in wireless bandwidth (up to 3.9 Gbps) using standard WiFi physical layer. The technology can also be applied to wireless back haul applications and technologies like WiMAX. Unique Technology: Multi-Streaming technology expands the available bandwidth by more than 10X the existing bandwidth. The wireless bandwidth expansion technology is a unique layer-3 patent-pending all-digital solution that does not affect the physical layer. Target Markets: Picongen targets HDDVD/Blu-Ray, HDTV, gaming stations and set-top box manufacturers where a conservative estimate for the projected market size for Picongen’s products is about $4 billion in 2009(2). Picongen’s market consists of OEM box manufacturers for the WiFi and IPTV markets with a projected market size of about $1 billion in 2009(1) for Picongen’s products. These markets have a CAGR of 24.9 % and 18.5 % (1, 2) respectively. The secondary markets include Wireless ISP (WISP) and cellular and wireless back haul. Products and Services: Picongen provides embedded software, net lists, IP and complete FPGA and reference designs for WiFi, HDDVD/Blu-Ray, gaming stations, HDTV, and set-top box manufacturers. Picongen’s road-map contains a diverse portfolio based on its core technology to comprehensively address the growing needs of the emerging home and office wireless markets. Next generation products for cellular and WISP markets can also be converted into an ASIC. Customers: Netgear, Cisco, D-link, Apple, Google, etc. are potential customers for the WiFi market, while those for the HDMI consumer market include Motorola, CISCO, Sony, Sharp, Samsung, Microsoft, etc. Picongen will secure OEM customers with established sales and distribution channels to promote its products and services. Sustainable Competitive Advantage: Picongen’s technology is unique Layer-3 digital solution protected by a strong patent portfolio that presents a very high barrier of entry. Picongen's broad patent portfolio prevents duplication of the core technologies by the competition while the team’s extensive wireless experience and hands-on product development expertise enables shorter time to market. Competitors’ Approach: The competitors to Multi-Streaming technology fit into one of two camps: (1) that uses higher-order compression over WiFi or UWB and (2) that uses larger spectrum at 60 GHz. Compression reduces resolution and lowers the quality of video for larger than 41” displays. Truncation is another scheme of compression where the least significant information bits of the video are chopped off to maintain higher speeds. The 60 GHz signals, on the other hand, are severely limited by line-of-sight (LoS), have low penetration through walls and have high path loss which require very high transmit power. This makes it difficult to realize a multi-room longer range solution. Picongen’s MultiStreaming solution is a high bandwidth (no compression) multi-room solution, with the same range and penetration as WiFi. Use of Funds: Picongen will build a prototype system consisting of a transmitter and a receiver to display wireless transmission of uncompressed and encrypted HDMI video transforming stand-alone HDDVD and HDTV into a wireless-HDDVD and a wireless-HDTV. Series-A funding will be sought using the prototype system.
