A Genetically Modified Corn

The picture above is a Genetically Modified Corn. I have chosen this particular GMO
because I do personally enjoy eating popcorn and maíz con yelo and a lot of people ---
especially the less fortunate ones eat corn. Also, ground corn is much cheaper than
rice. The purpose of this Genetically Modified Corn is to help corn farmers to grow pest-
resistant corns and make corns be more accessible for the poor.

The genetic modification of corn is done by extracting a gene of a specific genetic trait
from a donor organism. In the case of a genetically modified corn, the donor organism is
a naturally occurring soil bacterium, called Bacillus thuringiensis – a bacteria that makes
Bt delta-endotoxin --- a protein that is toxic to some insects like Lepidoptera larvae, a
corn borer. And the bacterial cells then transfer the new DNA to the genome of the
corn’s cells. The corn’s cells that have successfully taken up the DNA are then grown to
create a genetically modified corn.

This Genetically Modified corn will not need to use any pesticides for it is pest resistant
itself thus, enabling the corns to continue to grow big and with good quality and it will
lessen or possibly stop the rejection of insect-infested corns. This helps to prevent corn
supply shortage which makes the price of the corn remain affordable for everyone. And
the most important characteristic of it is that there will be fewer chemicals for humans to
consume for genetically modified corns do not use pesticides.
