TASK – 1: INTRODUCTION
The title of the current article to be reviewed is “Labour looks to boost protections for
workers in insecure jobs” being written by Michelle Grattan published on October 29, 2019.
The article majorly focused on the manner workforce of Australia could be directed through
the enduring values of labour in modelling the alteration being faced, compelled majorly
through rapidly progressing technology. The author also articulated about the new ways for
protection of the employees in employment which is not secure. In other words, the main
views were concerned with the jobs along with the future of work. Because of the gig
economy, where the labour market is being featured through the occurrence of short term
contracts, there has been rise in the job insecurity and widespread of casual employment.
Numerous people now have income which are unpredictable in nature that too with fewer
protection disabling them to plan for their future financials. The author also pointed out the
opinion that all these Australians are worthy of superior sense of security and thus, new forms
of worker protections needs to be discussed for their welfare. In addition to this, the author
also focusses in this article about the manner in which altering economy will generate new
forms of jobs for the workers in Australia (The Conversation, 2019). There is a mismatch in
the labour market in the nation and thus, efforts will also be made by the Anthony Albanese,
the politician serving as the leader of opposition and labour party towards the centrality of its
growth. Moreover, the vocational education and training system (VET) which is already
revamped by the government is in severe crisis. A national project needs to be initiated for
making improvements in this system. Finally, the main crux of the article is about what has
been said by Albanese i.e. government needs to be proactive rather than reactive considering
the changing landscape and forces of change.

There are many people being involved in this article and have some or the other role
in changing the labour system. An elaboration of them is being done underneath:
 Anthony Albanese – Albanese, a politician serving as the leader of opposition and
labour party plays a major role in this article as it is all about the speech which he has
given on jobs and future of work in Perth, Australia on Tuesday, 29 Oct 2019. From
the year 1996, he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Grayndler and in the
year 2013, he was the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia (Oriel, 2020). Furthermore,
Anthony Albanese is a passionate supporter of the environment, rights of the workers,
equality for all the members of the society irrespective of the religion, sex, gender,

 age and race. Being a leader of the opposition party, he made a speech regarding
protecting the rights of the workers and securing their job by offering different
employment arrangements. He can definitely make a change in the labour system as
he has the power to make encourage people, motivate them and enforce laws that
needs to be abide by all. A leader of the labour party possess the authority to
transform the system if they stick on the things they said and promised to general
public.
 Labour – The term labour is also being used in the article many a times and is simply
being known as “The Australian Labor Party (ALP)”. It is the main centre-left
political party in the Australian politics and is presently in Opposition in the federal
parliament. They are committed towards offering fairness at work and giving access
to quality education to all (Middleton, 2016, p.240). They are also dedicated for the
promotion of equality and engage all people of Australia in the decision making
regarding their own land. Labour became the part of conversation in this article, as
Anthony Albanese being a leader of labour party, in his speech mentioned about how
this party will institute a novel nation-wide conglomerate for driving better-quality
results in workforce planning and vocational training and education in the emerging
sectors of the economy.
 Tony Burke – He is also a political serving as a manager of Opposition Business since
2013. He came in the conversation as Anthony Albanese symbolized him as an
industrial relation minister which is a shadow of labour, will protect the right of
workers and will not be afraid of any change.

TASK – 3: ANALYSIS
The beginning of the article offers an informative overview into the promises being
made by Anthony Albanese, the leader of opposition and labour party. For example, it
includes about his vision for jobs and future work and the “four-point plan" which is strongly
appealed by the economy and was failed to communicate to the party to authorise in the year
2013. These four point plan such as investing in education, training and abilities, highlighting
jobs in innovative industries, making cities more sustainable and to convey on in impartial
manner will be focused by him. There are many things which are quite pleasing in this article.
First of all, the topic of the article clearly defines its main purpose i.e. labour looks to boost
the protection of the workers (Martin, 2019). It is not ambiguous and clearly states that the
vision of the leader of The Australian Labour Party (ALP) that they want to generate new

forms of jobs for the workers in Australia which will protect the workers from job insecurity,
casual employment and unpredictable income.
Additionally, the key words in the articles such as employment, industrial relations,
Anthony Albanese, causal labour and gig economy are also clearly defined. For instance,
important elements of employment was evidently defined in the article such as full time, part
time and flexible jobs. However, at some points there was some disconnection being felt
amid the words that were on the page and the manner in which he was delivering his speech.
This sometimes ruins the meaning that the speaker needs to convey to general public
(Charteris-Black, 2013, p. 293). Considering the illustration from the article, the author starts
by saying that there is an incongruity in the labour market in the nation and thus, efforts will
also be made by the government and the politician serving as the leader of opposition and
labour party towards the centrality of its growth. The way it was narrated and written by the
author created a direct tweak towards the successive government.
Underpinning the analysis further, the author acknowledged all the possible actions
that will be taken by the leader of labour party effectively which without a doubt raises no
question on the ways worker’s right will be protected. For instance, during the middle of his
speech, Albanese stole the idea of portable entitlements which signifies giving permission to
employees to move or their rights from one job to the another job. In addition to this, his
speech also includes different functions which will be performed by him during his tenure

added that it is revolution which is altering each and everything that is the manner in which
people live and the manner in which they learn. It is also changing the way people associate
with one another and of course the manner they used to perform their task and activity at job.
Besides, emphasizing on the flow of the article, it significantly reinforces the main
premise of the article (Grattan, 2019). The important subject and key terms of the speech are

being scattered along the way and because of this, it has kept the interest of the readers after
the initial hook as well. They are well inserted in the middle of the paragraph. For example,
in the beginning of the second paragraph, the speaker used convincing perspective that the
workers are worthy of a better sense of security. Similarly, in the fourth paragraph, he again
emphasized and used words such as circuit breaker which allures the interest of the readers
and make them stick towards the article.
Likewise, the paragraph being used in the article were quite short along with the text
which were used in the article, were visually appealing. As analysed from the article, author
have used almost right to ten sentences in a paragraph, which are tantalizing and easy. They
itself feel like an accomplishment. In my opinion, the reader will chase the words from
paragraph to paragraph and will also offer them a space amid ideas (Jones, 2011). In addition
to this, the overall strategies being used in the article for protection of the workers are well-
defined and arranged effectively.
The current article is very straightforward in the very beginning and from the first
page itself, the readers will realize the direction in which the article is being headed.
Nevertheless, for the purpose of having more and more people to be engaged towards this
piece of work, there is a requirement of some more concise information in the introduction
section. As soon as the reader gets an effective strategies, practices and examples that will
help in protecting the rights of the workers, a virtuous section of the article has by this time
past. Thus, it can be said that it is in fact a decent as well as a well-written article with crucial
information along with message about the protection of workers that the leader of labour
party will perform in terms of job insecurity and unpredictable income for the general public
along with the administrators and organizations (Bramble and Rick, 2011). Furthermore, the
piece when considered as a whole, is quite relevant and substantial in theoretical aspects.
However, in practical viewpoint, how far it will be applicable and sustained is a big question.

TASK – 4: CONCLUSION
Consequently, from the above analysis it can be concluded that the article is well-
thought out and interesting as it enlightens the measures that the leader of the labour party
Anthony Albanese will take for protecting the rights of the workers in Australia. From its
very beginning, it can be noted that it is quite forthright and adequately written. One of the
most important advantage I think I had from this article is learning from the experiences as
well as knowledge. This is being regarded as the main reason behind inscribing any article as
it helps in creating data with the potential audience of the whole globe. I have also learned

about the importance of considering facts and figures and the way to accurately associate own
viewpoints and experiences. Nevertheless, this article includes the speech of a politician
which might not be true in a practical point of view and thus, posting information which are
not accurate or true in any manner can make this article an offensive tool. Furthermore, I
have also learned that it is important to put up plan and strategies for a certain problem,
however it is equally important to present certain concrete guidelines for the same. For
instance, in the current article, the leader of the labour party mentioned that they will create a
new partnership for driving improved results in relation with the vocational education
training sector as well as for strengthening planning related to the workforce. Besides, a
tangible guidelines along with their functions were also presented by him, which is a good
concept and best manner to convey to general public. Thus, on a whole it can be attributed
that the idea being presented in the article is convincing, nonetheless its importance or in
other words practical value for its respective field is questionable.
