ground floor and doesn’t have stairs.

1 since: ... he was born is a fixed time in the past so we
use since.
2 for: For ages is a period of time.
3 since: ... ten o’clock this morning is a fixed time in the
past so we use since.
4 for: ... a long time is a period of time so we use for.
5 since: breakfast here means the time that meal was
eaten so we use since.
Exercise 6
1 has worked: Tom started work two months ago and he
still works there now. This is not something which has
finished, so we use the present perfect.
2 seen Ben since: The speaker saw Ben at a fixed time in
the past, so we can use the present perfect with since.
3 came: Two weeks ago is a definite past time reference,
so we use the past simple.
4 have been: They arrived three weeks ago and they’re still
here now, so we use the present perfect. The use of for
three weeks after the gap is another clue that we need
the present perfect.
5 have you known: The person has known Karen from
when they first met until now, so we use the present
perfect. We also have to change the verb used.

1 am cooking: This is a plan. The speaker has already
organized this with other people, so we use the present
continuous.
2 will close: This is an offer. The speaker has only just
decided to do it, so we use will.
3 is flying: This is a plan. The father probably arranged this
some time ago, so we use the present continuous.
4 am going to finish: This is the speaker’s intention.
They’ve already decided what they want to do tonight.
5 will go: This is a spontaneous decision. The speaker is
deciding what to do as they speak.

1 will have: This is a spontaneous decision. The speaker is
deciding what to do as they speak.
2 are staying: This is a plan. They’ve made arrangements

middle of towns called the square, maybe with shops
