ELEMENTARY EGYPTIAN (EGYPT 100A)

M/W | 12:00–2 PM | 271 Barrows Hall | 5 Units

Learn how to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs in this beginning course, which is
open to all and does not require any previous study of the language. It will introduce
you to the principles of the hieroglyphic writing system, with the grammar, syntax, and
vocabulary necessary to begin reading and translating Middle Egyptian, the most
important stage of the ancient Egyptian language. Spoken from 2000 to 1600 BCE, it
was used not only to write letters, documents, and literary works, but also magical
inscriptions in tombs and temples, continuing in its written form until 300 CE.

This course provides the foundation for future study in the ancient Egyptian language
and is a prerequisite for Egyptian 100B, the continuing class offered in Spring
Semester, 2018. This two-semester sequence is the required prerequisite for all other
ancient Egyptian language courses in our Near Eastern Studies Department. Berkeley.
It is also a pre-approved elective for Linguistics majors.
