Egyptian 101A: Intermediate Egyptian

Fall 2018, 3 Units
Lecture: M/W | 12:00–1:30 PM | 271 Barrows Hall

Instructor: Barbara Richter, Ph.D. (richter@berkeley.edu)

This course builds upon skills acquired in the first-year course in Middle Egyptian, the
most important stage of the ancient language. After a review of the verbal system, we will
begin close readings of various Middle Egyptian hieroglyphic texts, primarily from the
First Intermediate Period through the New Kingdom, and including documentary and
literary works, letters, and magical inscriptions in temples, tombs, and on papyri and
funerary artifacts. After completing this course, you will have acquired strategies for
learning vocabulary, analyzing sentences grammatically, and rendering transliterations
and translations of Middle Egyptian texts. You will also have a greater appreciation for
the diversity of texts written in Middle Egyptian. This course continues the foundation for
future study in the ancient language and is a prerequisite for Egyptian 101B, the
continuing class offered in Spring Semester, 2019, which will focus on readings in Middle
Egyptian hieratic, including biographical, literary, historical, and magical texts.

Join us for the first class in 271 Barrows Hall, Wednesday, August 22, 2018!
