ASSIGNMENT LESSON 5

1. GIVE YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT COMMUNITY

IMMERSION.
Community Immersion is a work done by a certain group of people that aims to
help others. It is commonly done in a place near you. When we do community
immersion, we gather as a team with a main goal and that is extending our help
to those who needs our assistance without expecting any form of payment. We
do this as an act of volunteering for the betterment of the community.
Community immersion is considered as one of the best ways to help the public
and give back to your community. It does not only have positive effects on
society, but it will bring benefits to your life and personal development.
Giving back and assisting others is the basis of community immersion. It
teaches us how significant it is to help the ones in need, the ones who are less
fortunate than us. The importance of community immersion lies in the fact that
it connects us to the community by improving it, and making it a better place
for all of us to live in. One of the community immersion benefits is that it
provides you with the chance to improve skills important for a workplace, such
as communication and organizational skills, teamwork, planning, problem-
solving and task management.
Furthermore, people could first merely try out an attractive career through
volunteering before leaping to a long-term commitment. Community immersion
provides you with a perfect opportunity to become closer to the community you
live in. It broadens your horizons by helping you understand the needs of the
society and the population you are trying to help through the project you are
volunteering on. It brings you closer to families and individuals in need, gives
you firsthand experience and understanding of the conditions they are in.
2. GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF COMMUNITY IMMERSION.
Community immersion is a way that empowers the people towards achieving
development for the community. According to IdsWater.com, the activities of
community immersion that can be done in the locality are as follows:
• Home visits.
• Living with selected families.
• Informal discussions with individuals or groups.
• Sharing in household and community activities.
• Attendance in social gatherings.
• Assistance in production work.
3. ENUMERATE THE DIFFERENT STEPS INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY
IMMERSION.
Community immersion as a voluntary and participatory approach in
developing a wholesome and ideal society, is reflected on the following
student learning activities:
1. Determining the economic, psychosocial, and political status of the
people as students immerse in actual community life.
2. Identifying the community need, interests, and other concerns.
3. Gaining personal development through acquiring additional
knowledge on real-life situation and giving importance to good values
and life skills.
4. Recognizing people’s dignity by letting students participate in
community programs and help in determining appropriate course of
action for community problems.
5. Realizing that student participation yields contribution to the welfare
of the community, and that community, in turn gives meaning to the
holistic development of students.
4. EXPLAIN THE NATURE AND APPROACHES IN COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT WORKS.
The terms "community work" and "community-based work" are
frequently interchanged. The only thing they have in common is that they
both fall under the umbrella of community development initiatives. To
distinguish, community work necessitates the participation of individuals
to a greater or lesser extent, whereas community-based work involves
the community but on a smaller scale than community labor.

Community development approaches are defined by the following:

1. Sustainability (long or short-term)
2. Area of concentration (local, national, global, and overseas)
3. Field or specialization (e.g., education advancement or religion
affairs)
4. Objectives, vision, and mission (e.g., social security or rural
domination with the use of kindness)
Because community development work is still broad, the categories
listed are not guaranteed to be absolute. These are the random, more
detailed lists of approaches, as are the lists that will be specified below
as the different approaches to community development work.
1. Technical assistance approach: It is involved in the effective
implementation of developing programs or services that
enable communities to consult with outside experts in areas
where they may be lacking be extremely technical, or that may
necessitate credentials in order to obtain more money or
implementation.
2. Self-help approach: It invites members of the community to
collaborate increasing communal independence. In self-help
groups, people who are vulnerable, voiceless, and powerless
can gain immense strength. Activities including a visioning
and goal-setting process can be used to demonstrate this
approach.
3. Con approach: It focuses on challenging the causes that are
impeding the efforts to solve problems by increasing human
ability to address local issues and concerns and changing the
community's engagement structure.
4. Structural or brick-and-mortar approach: In terms of
constitution, it is primarily concerned with the community
members' basis. It may involve the process of constructing
infrastructure that meet human and intersecting forms of
oppression that occur at personal, cultural, and structural
level, with each level influencing oppression on the others.
5. Social justice and human rights approach: It focuses on
the behavioral, cultural, ethnical, and social affairs as a
leading target for communal development in or outside the
community. The concept of social justice involves finding the
optimum balance between people’s joint responsibilities as a
society and people’s responsibilities as individuals to
contribute to a just society.
6. Ecological or Environmental approach: It targets crises as
major focal point for developmental, radical alternatives to
address the natural make-up of the earth. The approach
focuses on the ecological or environmental protection and
advancement.
7. Multi-method approach: It combines methods that will most
likely ensure the progress and success of communal work
goals that are inherently unheard of. A multi method
approach crams more than one kind of approaches into one-
of-a-kind, hybrid-like approach, which has been unconsciously
practiced today by many organizations.
5. DESIGN A COMMUNITY IMMERSION PROGRAM WITH
ACTIVITIES COMPLIANT WITH THE PROTOCOLS OF
INTERVENTION.
As an Explorer, you can embark on a variety of community service
adventures that encourage reflection and introspection, while
fostering a supportive and inclusive community among everyone.
Street Outreach Program
The Senior Outreach Program visits the elderly residents; engages
in therapeutic social activities; and provides free services to those we
serve in Retirement Homes in Panabo City.
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Senior Outreach Program is to serve the elderly
with mental health services and resources. The program will be
staffed by mental health professionals and community volunteers
that provide free services to those we serve in the Retirement Homes
in Panabo City. Three times a week, the volunteers will visit the
residents of Retirement Homes in Panabo City, strengthening their
relationships with the residents through various social activities.
Though the Senior Outreach Program, the volunteers can gain a
better understanding on how to take good care of the elderly by
forming relationships with the residents. The Senior Outreach
program works to promote a better understanding of the lives of the
elderly within our community.
As a program, we will try to provide recreational activities that will
encourage to form deeper relationships between the volunteers and
the residents.
