Florida’s coral reefs came into existence 5,000 to 7,000 years ago when sea levels rose following the
Wisconsin Ice Age. Reef growth is slow; estimates range from one to sixteen feet every
1,000 years. The tropical setting in Florida's reefs attracts millions of visitors annually. In order to
minimize human damage to the corals, everyone's cooperation is needed. The reefs are well marked
on navigation charts; if you are not familiar with the area, refer to the charts.
When diving or snorkeling, look, but do not touch! Do not grasp, stand or sit on living coral. You
may damage the coral and hurt yourself in the process. All coral is protected. It is against the law to
collect, harvest or sell Florida corals in state and adjacent federal waters.
Every year careless boaters run aground, destroying coral colonies that are hundreds of years old.
Seen from the surface, reefs have a unique golden-brown color. If you see brown, you may be about
to run aground. Be cautious when anchoring your boat. Do not deploy the anchor directly in coral.
Usually there are sandy areas close by; anchor in the sand. Florida coral reefs, with whom we share
the seas, are significant, unique natural resources. Be a responsible visitor - insure the continued
vitality of Florida's coral reefs.

B Reading, as you know, is a continuous and never ending process. If you do very little reading, or
if you read only material that offers no challenge to your comprehension, your reading will be of very
little use. Once we reach a certain age, or once our formal schooling is completed, many of us
become so restricted in our choice of reading that we rarely read any new type of reading
experience. We tend to read only books in our professional or business field, or only inspirational
books, or only our favorite newspapers every morning, or only one magazine for which we have
developed a preference. And the trouble starts here. You should neither read only for entertainment
nor only for information but you should also read for intellectual growth, for mental stimulation, for
enriching your background of knowledge, for wisdom, and for broader outlook and mature
understanding. What kind of books should you read to continue your intellectual growth, to gain a
background for opinion and for judgment? The answer is simple one: Read books in fields you have
little or no acquaintance with, books that will open for you new horizons of learning, books that will
help you explore new areas of knowledge and experience, books that will make the world and people
more understandable to you. Sadly, more and more people today are giving up the printed word in
favor of being entertained and informed by watching TV, a popular entertainment ,device present at
almost homes. More and more children are being subjected to TV programming, perhaps as a
babysitter. More than two hours of TV time per day are now a part of children development,
generating physiological and mental problems that are of growing concern among experts.

B Getting good results in your study comes from developing good study habits. The best place to study
is a comfortable room with good lighting .The best chair for studying should be one which you would be
comfortable in but not so comfortable that you may fall asleep in it after a while. Before you study, look
for a quiet environment with no distractions. If you find your home too noisy for study , try the library or
community center instead
When you study, set realistic targets for yourself to achieve. For example, don’t aim to study 5
chapters of Geography in one sitting when you know that you take more than half an hour to read one
chapter. Further more, remember not to push yourself too hard. When you have studied for a period of
time , reward yourself by taking a short rest. You could perhaps take a short walk or listen to some music
for a while
If you begin to feel sleepy when studying, don’t force yourself to go on as you may lose your power of
concentration. Instead, you may want to take a short nap to refresh yourself. Studying may also be
strenuous on the eyes. When you study , it may be a good idea to lift your eyes away from your books
occasionally. Looking at objects at a distance or at greenery can help soothe tired eyes
1.What is The 1st thing to be considered in the developing good study habits
2.When should you take a short snap ?
3.How are your eyes refreshed ?
4.Which of the followings doesn’t improve your good study habits ? A a quiet with enough
lightning B an extremely
comfortable chair C a proper chair and a right- sized table D a public or college library
5.When studying , you’d better ….....................................……..
a learn as much as you want in one sitting b learn either sitting at the table or
standing
c take a short break after every chapter d set goals that are reachable for you
A how to use your study time efficiently B How to build up good study habits
C How to get relaxed when studying D How to a void sleepiness when studying
It can be shown in facts and figures that cycling is the cheapest, most convenient, and most
environmentally desirable form of transport (26)______ towns, but such cold calculations do not mean
much on a frosty winter morning. The real appeal of cycling is that it is so (27)______. It has none of the
difficulties and tensions of other ways of travelling so you are more cheerful after a ride, even through the
rush hour.
The first thing a non-cyclist says to you is: “But isn’t it (28) ______ dangerous?” It would be foolish
to deny the danger of sharing the road with motor vehicles and it must be admitted that there are an
alarming (29) ______ of accidents involving cyclists. However, although police records (30) ______ that
the car driver is often to blame, the answer lies with the cyclist. It is possible to ride in such a way as to

D Parents whose children show a special interest in a particular sport have a difficult decision to make
about their children's careers.Should they allow their children to train to become top sportsmen and
women ? For many children it means starting very young and school work, going out with friends and
other interest have to take second place. It's very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has
to train for five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing. Another
problem is of course money. In many countries money for training is available from the government for
the very best young sports men and women. If this help cannot be given it means that it is the parents
who have to find the time and the money to support their child's development; etc. This can all be very
expensive. Many parents are understandably worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a
sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training before
they are properly developed. Professional trainers, however, believe that it is only by starting young
that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. What is clear is that very few people do
reach the top and both parents and children should be prepared for failure even after many years of
training.

D The last two decades have seen enormous changes in the way people’s lives are affected
by IT. Twenty years age. few people had access to a computer whilst today most people use
them at work, home or school and use of e-mail and the Internet is an every day event.
These developments have brought many benefits to our lives. E-mail makes
communication much easier and more immediate. This has numerous benefits for
business, commerce, and education. The World Wide Web means that information on very
conceivable subject is now available to us. Clearly, for many people this has made life
much easier and more convenient.
However, not all the effects of the new technology have been beneficial. Many people feel
that the widespread use of e-mail is destroying traditional forms of communication such as
letter writing, telephone and face-to-face conversation. In addition, the huge size of the
Web means it is almost impossible to control and regulate. This has led to many concerns
regarding children accessing unsuitable websites. In conclusion, developments in IT have
brought many benefits, yet I believe developments relating to new technology in the future
are likely to produce many negative effects that will need to be addressed very carefully.

E Most educational specialists believe that early schooling should provide children with an
awareness of their own abilities and the self-confidence to use their abilities. One approach
recognised by many experts as promoting these qualities is the Montessori method, first
practised by Maria Montessori of Italy in the early 1900s. Nancy McCormick Rambusch is
credited with popularising the method in the United States, where today there are over 400
Montessori schools.
The method helps children learn for themselves by providing them with instructional
materials and tasks that facilitate acts of discovery and manipulation. Through such
exploration, children 'develop their sense of touch and learn how to do everyday tasks
without adult assistance. Other benefits include improvement in language skills, and
acquaintance with elements of science, music, and art.
2 Which of the following is not mentioned as a benefit of the Montessori method in the USA
?
A. has little long-lasting benefit for children. B.. will lose its popularity
in the United States.
1 According to the passage, who was first responsible for spreading the Montessori method
