EXPERIMENT 1 COMPARISON OF ORGANIC AND INORGANI COMPOUNDS View the

experiment using this link: https://youtu.be/yu69x5cNDFw Answer the following based on the video.

1. What are the tests done in the experiment used in the comparison of organic and inorganic
compound? Give a brief description for each test done.

 Test 1 Flammability test

ORAGANIC INORGANIC

ETHANOL WATER
- Become ignite because of - NO REACTION because it’s an
combustion reaction. inorganic

 TEST 2 CHARRING TEST

-when reaching the high temperature they are having char during the combustion

ORGANIC INORGANIC

SUCROSE POWEDER SODIUM CHLORIDE

- It will be decomposed - -when reaching the high
- having discoloration process and temperature it change from
become coal. matter to solid to liquid in
- extreme temperature.
- MELTING

 TEST 3. SOLUBILITY TEST

- Like dissolves like
ORGANIC INORGANIC

CHROLOFORM + NAPHTHALENE DISTILLED WATER+

NAPHTHALENE
- Organic solid will dissolve in
organic solvents. -Naphthalene did not dissolve
because it was mix with an
inorganic solvents.
 TEST 4
TEST
FOR CARBON and Hydrogen

ORGANIC INORGANIC

DRY Copper oxide powder - Will form a water milky solution

When you hit the organic compound, it
will form carbon dioxide and water
vapor product
-they are decomposition happened
- copper absorb water and white turn to
blue color.

 TEST 5 TEST FOR OXYGEN

ORGANIC INORGANIC

BENZENE – and HEXANE ETHANOL

- nothing happened the – have a reaction ferrox
ferrox paper only become paper turns red color to
wet violet because of the positive
test of oxygen

TEST 6 TEST FOR NITROGEN

ORGANIC INORGANIC

UREA +SODIUM CARBOANTE

The litmus paper color red will turn it to

blue because of the presence of
ammonia.

TEST FOR SULFUR

ORGANIC INORGANIC

LEAD ACETATE
There is an evolution of gas inside the test
tube and it makes the filter turn into black
color.
3. Who is the Father of Organic Chemistry? How many organic compounds are known at present?
 The father of Organic Chemistry is “Friedrich Wohler, he was know as the seminal contribution
in organic chemistry.
 Up to date, there are more than nine million organic compounds.

4. What are the four main sources of organic compounds

> Organic compounds, which are the compounds associated with life processes, are the subject matter of
organic chemistry.
four major categories :
1.carbohydrates, - is a molecule composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; in most carbohydrates,
hydrogen and oxygen are found in the same two-to-one relative proportions they have in water. In fact,
the chemical formula for a “generic” molecule of carbohydrate is (CH 2O)n.
2.lipids, - A lipid is one of a highly diverse group of compounds made up mostly of hydrocarbons. The
few oxygen atoms they contain are often at the periphery of the molecule. Their nonpolar hydrocarbons
make all lipids hydrophobic. In water, lipids do not form a true solution, but they may form an emulsion,
which is the term for a mixture of solutions that do not mix well.
3.proteins, - A protein is an organic molecule composed of amino acids linked by peptide bonds
4.nucleic acids - A nucleotide is one of a class of organic compounds composed of three subunits:
 one or more phosphate groups
 a pentose sugar: either deoxyribose or ribose
 a nitrogen-containing base: adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, or uracil
