Fine Art allows for self-expression and innovation, hence my interest in studying it at degree level.

My
studies revolve around the creative process, exploring the production stages of products and looking at
nuanced layers that convey emotion in pieces of literature or art. The main reason for being attracted to
this specific area of Art is the opportunity to focus cultivation of skills and to learn about a multitude of
artistic genres.

Alongside my A Level subjects, I study the Gold Arts Award, which allowed me to develop my skills in
illustration, giving me a feel for a plethora of new ways of looking and interpreting my ideas, thus
building on my Fine Art explorative journey through abstract expressive portraiture. It was important for
me to discover and experiment with different creative forms before finalising my decision to study Fine
Art. During my Digital Media course, I learnt to create graphics, comply with a client brief and
investigate the production stages that go into creating digital products. From this I learnt to collaborate
with a client, grasping their brief, inputting my creativity, using persuasion and negotiation to hone
communication skills in an industry setting. Whilst studying English, I had the opportunity to go and see
'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’. As a keen theatregoer, I understand how stagecraft can enhance a production,
combining both theatrical and artistic expression. This expression has drawn me to the creative writing
unit, which assisted my writing skills when completing the written piece for Art, allowing me to be
descriptive when talking about my own work, and undertaking in-depth Artist research. Whilst these
subjects don't focus primarily on Fine Art, I’ve found there are transferable skills between them and I’ve
developed my creative thinking and critical evaluation skills, allowing for me to take every opportunity to
incorporate Art into each aspect of my education.

Outside my studies, I enriched my learning by helping at the Sixth Form Open Evening and becoming the
school’s Art Ambassador. As the Ambassador, I learnt how to work with Art students, assist with Year
Seven Art lessons, and connect with likeminded creative individuals. As for helping with community Art
projects, I’ll be assisting with the creation of an Art themed alleyway, learning valuable skills from the
Artist commissioned for the project, whilst working in a professional environment. As for connecting
with Artists from around the world, I use my Social Media presence to communicate with contemporary
Artists, such as Elly Smallwood, who has influenced my A Level coursework and provided positive
feedback for the work I take pride in.

Reading ‘50 Women Artists You Should Know' has further made me realise the importance of female
artists and I aspire to emulate their success, producing Art that has an impact on the way people perceive
the world. Whilst doing my Gold Arts Award, I produced an essay titled ‘Being an Artist is a Waste of a
Career', which I considered comparison, contrast and divergent views for each side of the bold statement.
During my research, I consolidated my industry knowledge of roles available to Art graduates, amongst
these were critics, curators, designers and infinitely more. I would love to do any of these careers, with
my main aspiration being to become an Artist.

Studying Fine Art at your University will allow for me to utilise the studio space provided and learn a
range of techniques that I can use to build upon my existing skills. As a passionate and dedicated student
who spends much of my free time practicing my skills in the school Art room, advancing into a
professional environment would further inspire me to create more high-quality work. Most of all, I am
eager to build up a portfolio that demonstrates my artistic ability, as well as meeting other talented Artists,
who agree that Art is a way of life and are excited to create, experiment and inspire.
