Multicultural Literature Lesson Activity: Rent

1. Lesson Objectives: promote critical thinking and provide base knowledge of history,
historical contexts and background of The musical Rent.

3. Instruction- learning Process: Create a detailed outline of the multicultural activity following
the teaching design below:

● Do First/ Mini Lesson: introduction and mini lesson are both included in the powerpoint video

● Guided Practice:
I will then read the lyrics to la Vie Bohem and explain the meaning as I understand it, this shows
them how to complete the following assignment.

● Independent Practice: next the class will be broken into groups and after 15 minutes of reading
and preparing as a group each group will read and explain a lyric page just like I did.

● Exit Slip: I am going to return to the front of class and ask the class a few questions based off of
what was mentioned in their explanation or thing is felt should have been mentioned

5. Reflection:

My lesson taught critical thinking, history, reading comprehension.

My lesson also taught about LGBT history, and Culture as well as allowed student the
opportunity to come to their own understanding about this diverse subculture through their
examination of the lyrics.

I believe the strength and weakness of the lesson plan is it leaves a lot of the lesson up to the
comprehension of the students.
