waters, territorial sea, and archipelagic waters?

Internal Waters
Definition “Waters which lie landward of the baseline from which the territorial sea and
other maritime zones are measured”
Legal Status: full territorial sovereignty
“Internal waters are subject to the sovereignty of the State and that it is by virtue of its
sovereignty that the coastal state may regulate access to its ports” (Nicaragua Case,1986)
Access to Ports
“All ports used for international trade are open to all merchant vessels, but this is a practice
only, based upon convenience and commercial inter est” (De La Fayette,1996)
