ANALYSIS

1. What were the observed manifest (open) and latent (hidden)

functions of schools in your community?

The manifest (open) functions I observed in the schools in our

community includes educating the students in the very first place to
provide intellectual and practical skills. The elementary teachers are
said to be qualified teachers who provide children the basic skills in
order to read and write as well as integrating social control. For
example, in my sister’s case, she wasn’t able to conform the norms of
their school, her attention was called by the Prefect of Discipline, the

same is true in high school and college level, students are being
punished according to the rule of their school, for example if they do
not follow and respect the law being implemented by the school
authorities (bullying, proper haircut, proper uniform) and they also give
more importance in acquiring skills and prepare themselves to enter
the workplace because one of the main goals of education is for their
social mobility. On the other hand, the latent function I observed is of
course, the social networking wherein the students meet new friends
and acquaintances especially in the first day of class, all are excited for
the new faces. Other than that, we can’t deny the fact that there are
high school or college sweethearts in every school, yet it’s not the reason
of going to school but unintentionally, it became part of the students’
lives.

2. Can you remember a scenario or event wherein your classmates

have a fight? How does your teacher settle such incident?
Yes, I can still remember when I was in junior high, my
classmates had a fight like they physically hurt each other. The
reason? It’s because of the basketball game when we’re having
our PE class. My classmate insisted that the other team cheated
their actions like they’re not following the standard of the game
and results to a fight. Our PE teacher respond those incident by
calling their attention into the Prefect of Discipline since he can’t
handle alone anymore the situation because my classmates
seemed they do not want to cease the fight; they talk about the
said matter in the office of the POD together with our teacher,
and in the next day, my classmates were in good terms.
