a. Most Essential Learning Competency

Explain color and intensity of light in terms of its wave characteristics.

b. Objective/s
1. Infer that brightness of light is dependent on the distance of the source
2. Describe the characteristics of colors of light according to frequency, wavelength
and energy of the different colors of light
3. Relate frequency, wavelength and energy of the different colors of light

God was able to see His beautiful creations because of the LIGHT He created. Almost
everything we see around us is made visible by the light it reflects from sources such as sun,
candle, etc. But what is light? What are the different characteristics of light? Have fun in learning all
of these lessons about light by reading and answering the prepared activities in this learning
activity sheets.

A. Practice Tasks

PART 1 - CHARACTERISTICS OF LIGHT

Figure 1. Illumination of light vs3 Distance from light source

Objects that emit their own light are called luminous object. They can further be classified
as natural sources of light such as the sun and stars and artificial sources of light such as bulb,
candles, flashlight etc. On the other hand, objects that reflects light in order to be seen are called
illuminated objects. In the absence of luminous object, illuminated objects will not be seen.
Examples are planets, moon and almost all the things around us.
A given amount of light will spread over a wider area as it moves away from the source.
This area increases as the square of the distance from the source. The amount of light falling on
each unit area will decrease as the distance of the source of light from the source increases.
Different distances from the source of light produces varied light intensity.
Remember that what actually changes is the amount of light that falls per unit area or the
illumination. The changes that you may see on the intensity or brightness of light is APPARENT or
seemingly real.

Sir Isaac Newton formulated the Corpuscular Theory of Light

which states that light is composed of tiny particles called
“corpuscles”. Using a triangular shaped glass prism, he is able
to separate white light into colors. This separation of white light
into colors is called dispersion. Dispersion is a special kind of
refraction. This happens because these spectrum of colors
have different wavelengths. The index of refraction depends
upon these wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the
greater is the index of refraction. Thus as white light pass
through the prism, different colors of light bent at varying
degrees.

Figure 2. Newton showing that white

light is composed of different colors

Violet has the shortest wavelength

and thus bent the most followed by blue and other colors.
Red has the longest wavelength and thus
bent the least.
Just like electromagnetic waves,
these colors are arranged according to wavelength and
Figure 3. White light dispersed into colors frequency. Violet has the highest frequency and
energy while red has the lowest frequency and
energy. This arrangement is called color spectrum.
Colors bring life to the things around us. Just like pitch (the highness or lowness of sound),
the color of the object depends upon the frequency of light it emits or as reflected by the object.
There are three primary colors of light- red, blue
and green. The combination of these three colors
becomes the white light. Thus, white is not a color
itself rather a combination of all the colors of light.
Similarly, black is also not a color rather the
absence of light.
When the three primary colors of light are projected
on white screen, the overlapping areas produce
different color of light.

RED + GREEN = Yellow
BLUE + GREEN = Cyan

RED + BLUE + GREEN = White

APPLICATION

I. Choose among these possible outputs: collage, photo-essay or poster. Thru one of
these outputs, answer this question:
“How would life be without LIGHT?”

II. Have you ever seen a rainbow after the rain? Rainbow is a spectacular example of
dispersion, water droplets act as prism. As sunlight pass through them, water droplets
dispersed light into colors and thus producing rainbow.
What is the top color of the rainbow? Why is this so?
