Revision 0 - 96.05.21 Issued for Use UNITED PIPELINE SYSTI STALLATION ENGINEERING GUIDELINES AND RULES OF THUMB In pipelines where an HDPE liner is to be installed by United Pipeline Systems, the Engineer should consider the following in addition to published United documents. This document is meant to help the Engineer in his initial design, however United must be contacted prior to finalizing design. United generally requires 2 to 3 weeks notice prior to installing liners in 2”, 3” and 4” lines as the material is usually in stock, and 4 to 6 weeks notice for lines 6” and over as materials must be manufactured. Guidelines v 2 3) 4) 5) 6) Liner cannot be pulled through standard elbows and tight bends. United usually require that all bends, including over- and under-bends, be radiused a minimum of 50 pipe diameters. They can be radiused as tight as 30 diameters in shorter-than-usual pulls, however anything tighter than 50D should be discussed with a United Representative early in design. Refer to United documentation on recommended belihole sizes. Bellholes should be preferably located at road edge, where vent risers can be installed and easily checked. A vent riser should generally be installed on each segment of pipe for leak monitoring purposes. Jumpers can generally be installed on 2 segments of pipe (up to 5 segments on short pulls) to reduce the number of vent risers. However, this will drastically reduce the ability to pin-point leaks, Pipeline routing drawings are to be forwarded to United, who will locate all of the necessary bellholes. Liners cannot be pulled through standard pipe fittings such as elbows and tees. If fittings are required, they must be flanged, internally coated spool pieces, It is possible to tee into an existing line which already has liner. The pipeline contractor would cut the pipe as usual, shave back the liner about 4 inches in order to weld on flanges. United has a retriever cone which is then inserted into the pipe, which heats up and is fused to the liner. They then pull the liner back as per usual. United should be specifically contacted to get a detailed scope of work required for the above procedure. Hot oiling is not recommended even though the liner is rated to a temperature of 180°F. United recommends the highest hot oiling temperature be limited to 140°F (60°C). United recommends the maximum normal operating temperatures for the following fluids: Water: 85°C il Emulsion (up to 40% oil): 60°C Oil Emusion (over 40% oil): 40° LAPCAICONSTRIFORMSWUNITED?.00C 7) 8) 9) 10) 1) Revision 0 - 96.05.21 Issued for Use High Pressure Gas (wet gas, but no free water: Hot oilin 40°C 60°C (Note: At the time of this writing, United advised that it is researching alternate materials to HDPE which are being field tested to increase operating temperatures for gas and hydrocarbon service). Liner thickness and “rule-of-thumb” maximum pull lengths: Pipe size Liner thickness Max. pull length 2 inch 0.200" 400 m 3 inch 0.200" 500 - 600 m 4 inch 0.210" 800 m 6 inch 0.225" 1000 m 8 inch 0.250" 900 - 1000 m 10 inch 0.280" 1000 m Note that the above pull lengths are based on new pipe. Pull lengths for old pipe being retro-fitted with liners should be reduced by 10%, depending on the internal condition of pipe. Note also that pull lengths are affected by the number of bends in a segment. A general rule of thumb is to keep the sum of bends in a single segment under 180°. This is to prevent damage to pipe by the pull wire {especially thin walled pipe). For injection water lines, a Backpressure Control Valve must be installed at the wellhead to prevent a vacuum condition which may collapse the liner. United supplies the following components for the installation by the Pipeline Contractor: 2) ANSI flanges to pipeline material specifications bored to suit the pipeline wall thickness c/w studs and nuts. b) Retainer rings. ©) Thredolets for the vent riser at each end. United is also able to supply fabricated risers with HDPE liner installed, although these are fabricated on an as-needed basis in the shop, and thus require sufficient lead time. United supplies and installs the following components: a) HOPE Liner. b) _ Stainless steel pipe, fittings and valves for the vent risers. Refer to the installation guidelines for United liners. Supervision of United shall be performed by PanCanadian’s Construction Supervisor. The excavation of bellholes at locations noted on the construction drawings, or where specified by United. The excavation of the bellholes shall be as per the attached United Drawings 1900-00536 and 1900-00537, and OH&S requirements. Installation of flanges and %" NPT thredolets at liner pull locations. The thredolet is NOT to be drilled by the Contractor as this is United's responsibility. The typical preparation is as per the attached United Drawing 1900-00538. United supplies the thredolets and specially machined flanges ciw retainer rings, studs and nuts. Strength and leak tests of line in accordance with CSA 2662.94. The Pipeline Contractor shall ensure the line is internally clean, depressurized and dewatered prior to United's installation of the HDPE liner. In the case of existing pipelines, PanCanadian Operations is responsible to depressure and clean the pipeline prior to turning the pipeline over to the Pipeline Contractor for pressure testing and liner pull. Ensure all side-, over-, or under-bends are radiused a minimum of 50 pipe diameters unless otherwise indicated on the construction drawings. Liner Excavation W 2) Pipeline Contractor shall ensure United is provided with free and clear 4- wheel access to the pipeline R.O.W. and all bellholes. Prior to installing the HDPE liner, United shall check the pipeline with a sizing pig. If the pig is restrained by an obstruction such as high welds, tight bends, etc., it shall be the Pipeline Contractor's responsibility to excavate, cutout, and remove the obstruction, at no extra cost to PanCanadian. Welding shall be as per the attached United Drawing 1900-00533. Lapcerconsravoanswnites.00c 3) Revision 0 - 96,01.03 Issued for Construction United shall bolt-up all mid-point flanges c/w retainer rings, following liner installation. United shall also drill the %" NPT thredolets, and supply and install the 4” NPT stainless steel vent pipes c/w valves, and 4” x 4” post. United will attach %” pipe riser c/w valve to the 4” x 4” post. United shall also be responsible for the re-wrapping of stripped linepipe and flanges with Denso tape at all mid-points. The Pipeline Contractor shall be responsible for the bolt-up of all end-point flanges c/w retainer ring, including wrapping the stripped linepipe and flanges with Denso tape. After Liner Installation ” 2) After bolt-up, United shall perform it’s own air leak test. Once United is satisfied with it's portion of the HDPE liner installation, the Pipeline Contractor shall perform the final 4 hr leak test at 110% of M.O.P. per CSA 2662.94. United shall be responsible, at it's own cost, to locate and repair any problems incurred as a result of the liner installation, The Pipeline Contractor shall be responsible for any leaks due to steel pipeline failure. Upon successful pressure test, the Pipeline Contractor shall be responsible to backfill the bellholes.
