3 tan 150 2 sin 

e.g.1 − =
cos30 cos(180 + ) tan( 270 − ) Sub an ‘ugly’ θ into the formula
take θ = 21
A. − 2 cos. 3 tan150 2sin 21
− = 1.87
B. 2 cos. cos 30 cos(180 + 21) tan(270 − 21)

2 A: − 2cos 21 = −1.87

C. − 2 cos .
cos  B: 2cos 20 = 1.87
2(1 + sin 2 ) 2
D. . C: − 2 cos 21 = 0.275
cos  cos 21
2(1 + sin 2 21)
D: = 2.42
cos 21
∴ B

sin(90 + ) + 3
e.g.2 For 0    90, the greatest value of is
2 − cos(180 − )

A. − 4. Method I:
4 Sub an ‘beautiful’ θ (0, 90, 180, 270)into the formula
B. . sin(90 + 0) + 3 4
3 Sub θ = 0, =
2 − cos(180 − 0) 3
3
C. . sin(90 + 90) + 3 3
2 Sub θ = 90, =
2 − cos(180 − 90) 2
D. 3.
Sub θ = 180, No! out of the range of 0    90
Sub θ = 270, No! out of the range of 0    90
∴ B

Method II: For 0    90,

0  cos   1
sin(90 + ) + 3 cos  + 3
= 2  2 + cos   3
2 − cos(180 − ) 2 + cos 
1 1 1
2 + cos  + 1  
= 2 2 + cos  3
2 + cos  3 1 4
  1+ 
= 1+
1 2 2 + cos  3
2 + cos 
sin(90 + ) + 3 3
 The greatest value of is .
2 − cos(180 − ) 2

e.g. 3 How many distinct solutions are there for the equation 2 cos 2  + 3sin  = 0 where 0  x  360 ?
A. 1
B. 2 2 cos 2  + 3sin  = 0
C. 3 2(1 − sin 2  ) + 3sin  = 0
D. 5 2sin 2  − 3sin  − 2 = 0
(sin  − 2)(2sin  + 1) = 0
sin  = −0.5 or 2(rejected)
 = 120 or 240
∴ B

Remark: If the range is 0  x  180, the answer will be A.
