Original Article Does anemia affects cognitive functions in neurologically intact adult patients: Two year cross sectional study at rural tertiary care hospital Sachin Agrawal’, Sunil Kumar’, Vaibhav Ingole', Sourya Acharya’, Anil Wanjari’, Shilpa Bawankule', Nitin Raisinghani' ‘Department of Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Science (Deemed to be University), Sawang! (Meghe), Wardia, Maharashtra, India Apsrracr Background: The anemia not only negatively affects physical function but also the cognition, mood, and quality of life in adult patients due to hypoxic condition as per its severity. This study has been planned to investigate te eross section association of anemia with cognitive function in neurologically intact patients. Methods: In this stud, a total 200 subjects were enrolled out of which 100 were cases and 100 age and sex matched controls. Min: mental status examination (MMSE) and short portable mental status questionnaire (SPNSQ) scales were used fo assess cognition in all the subjects. Results: This study showed that there was a significant correlation between the anemia and ‘the cognitive skis in the neurologically intact patients. Conclusion: The cognitive Functions were strongly related to hemoglobin levels as seen by low MMSE score and higher SPMSO error in those wth low hemoglobin levels compared with those with higher hemoglobin levels, Keywords: Adult, anemia, cognition, neurologically intact Relevance to the practice less than 13 g/dL. in men" Aa estimated tra billioa of the + Anemia is a widespread disorder ia the community and it i strongly sssocinted with poor cognitive performance isespective of etiology of anemia + Asmostof the patients of anemia had cognitive impairment, all ‘hepatients of anemia should be screened tor cognitive frctions + Enily detection and prompt treatment may help to seduce the effect of anemia on cognition, Introduction Anemia s defined according to World Health Organization (WHO) ‘as hemoglobin concentration less than [2.g/40 aa 125 o2t 218 oF 00 700 Tul 10 299 136 013 262 37 1.00 700 Journal of Famy Modes and Prnexy Cane Volume 8 : eve 9 Soptomber 2010 ‘Agrawal, etal: Does anemia affects cognitive functions in neurologically intact adult patients?
