Instructions:
The test is open book. If you have an electronic copy, you can open it during the
exam. You cannot have any other applications opened, except for Excel and your
pdf file (e-copy) of the book.
Include your name in every page you submit. Please email me any spreadsheet (excel,
Matlab) that you used to solve the problems during the exam. Name the file with your
name. Late submissions won’t be accepted.

Problem 1. (25 points)
Evaluate the fugacity coefficient φi and the fugacity fi for a fluid at the following
conditions:
a) The fluid behaves as an ideal gas for P < Psat. Graph φi and fi as a function of
pressure P between P=0 and Psat.
b) The fluid follows the equation of state PV/RT = 1- 1/3 P +1/2 P2; obtain φi and fi
as a function of pressure P.
c) Using your results in (b) evaluate φi and fi at Psat =5 bar.
d) What are the fugacities in the vapor phase fv and in the liquid phase fl at Psat =5
bar for the fluid described in (b).
e) Assuming that the fluid is incompressible, compute the fugacity of the liquid at
300K and 10 bar. It is known that the volume of the liquid at saturation is 50
cm3/mol. Is the Poynting factor relevant? Explain your answer.

Problem 2. (25 points)

The molar volume of a binary mixture (components 1 and 2) at fixed temperature and
pressure T and P is given by:
V = 220 x1 + 30 x2 + x1x2(10 x1 + 5 x2) where V is in cm3/mol.
a) Evaluate the partial molar volumes V1 and V2 for each of the components as
functions of x1.

b) Evaluate the pure species molar volumes V1 and V2

c) Evaluate the infinite dilution molar volumes,

d) Evaluate the ∆V of mixing, defined as ∆V = V - (V1x1+V2x2)

e) Is this an ideal solution? If not, describe the behavior of the mixture as a function
of composition (e.g., indicate if the mixture expands or contracts upon mixing).

Problem 3. (25 points)

Estimate the fugacity of 1-butene at 120oC and 34 bar. At 120oC the vapor pressure of
1-butene is 25.83 bar.

Problem 4. (25 points)

For the system methane (1)/ethane (2) as a gas, estimate f1, f2, φ1, φ2, at 100oC and 35
bar for y1 =0.4, y2 =0.6, using the Virial EOS truncated after the 2nd term. Based on
your results, does this system behave as an ideal gas mixture? Does it behave as an
ideal solution? Explain.
