Multiplication of Decimal numbers
We can apply the properties of multiplication of whole numbers to the multiplication of decimals
also.
Example: 4.3 × 3 = 4.3 + 4.3 + 4.3 = 12.9
( since multiplication is repeated addition )
Place the decimal point in the product such that you have the same number
of decimal digit as in the given decimal number.
4.3
× 3
12. 9
Thus 4 . 3 × 3 = 1 2 . 9
The number of decimal places in the product is equal to the sum of the number of decimal
places in the factors.
Multiplication by 10 , 100, 1000 : When a number is multiplied by 10, 100, 1000, and so on, the
decimal point moves 1 digit, 2 digits, 3 digits, etc., to the right respectively.
Example :
a) 3.675 × 10 = 36.75 ( The decimal point moves 1 place to the right )
b) 3.675 × 100 = 367.5 ( The decimal point moves 2 places to the right )
c) 3.675 × 1000 = 3675 ( The decimal point moves 3 places to the right )

Remainders while dividing decimals: When you divide decimals, you do not show remainders.
You have to write extra zeros to complete the division.

Division by 10, 100, 1000 : When a number is divided by 10, 100, 1000, and so on, the decimal
point moves 1 digit, 2 digits, 3 digits, etc., to the left respectively.
Example :
a) 865.3 ÷ 10 = 8 6 . 5 3 ( The decimal point moves 1 place to the left )
b) 865.3 ÷ 100 = 8 . 6 5 3 ( The decimal point moves 2 places to the left )
c) 865.3 ÷ 1000 = 0. 8 6 5 3 ( The decimal point moves 3 places to the left )
