Lesson 1. Establishment of Learning Environments that are Responsive to Community
Context

A. How does community affect the learning environment? 

ANSWER:
By helping to develop skills and capacities, the community can provide
multiple opportunities for achieving and increasing learning and wellbeing
outcomes within schools. Consequently, community involvement has become
an integral part of many schools. Children learn from the community members
(such as adults, peers, etc.). The behaviour of inhabitants of a community
reflects the climate of that community. Therefore, the community
environment is important for children's better learning. Environment of the
community influences the children's learning.
 
B. How important is curriculum contextualization and localization of lesson
and learning materials? 

ANSWER:
The localization of the curriculum can allow learning to become more
meaningful and relevant. It supports policy formulation and standard setting
for reform of the curriculum and the impact of this on teacher skills and
knowledge. Contextualization is defined as employing the items of the
language in a meaningful and relevant context. This helps the learners to
acquire new skills and knowledge. It also develops their abilities and attitudes.
Learners should be motivated to learn and to take part in the learning process.
 
C. What strategies are you going to use in order to create a culturally-
responsive learning environment? 

ANSWER:
The following are suggested strategies to foster a learning environment that is
responsive to community context: 
1. establishment of a school-community partnership to foster positive
relationship and to explore common goals that may improve school programs
and policies as well as the community; 
2. promotion of cultural and traditional activities to increase the teacher’s
cultural awareness and to preserve local traditions, beliefs, and values; 
3. utilization of culturally responsive teaching approaches to integrate teaching
and learning practices that are within the experience and cultural frame of
students; and 
4. contextualization and localization of learning content and materials to create a
relevant and meaningful learning experience for the students. 

 
Reflection. Complete the following statements. 
 
A. I realize that for every learning institution, there is a community with prevailing
culture that influences the learning environment and learning environment must be
responsive to the community context that requires an understanding of cultural beliefs
and practices, language, history, race, ethnicity, and perspective from different
cultural backgrounds.
 
B. I believe that community can be considered a great source of knowledge;
therefore, it is important to understand its role in engaging teachers and students in
learning. Meaningful learning happens in an environment that adapts to the context of
the community.

C. I feel that promotion of cultural and traditional activities to increase the teacher’s
cultural awareness and to preserve local traditions, beliefs, and values and utilization
of culturally responsive teaching approaches to integrate teaching and learning
practices that are within the experience and cultural frame of students.

D. Being a professional teacher requires to used strategies to foster a learning


environment that is responsive to community context.
