Philippine Arts: Historical Background


Learning Objective: To illustrate some highlights in the development of Philippine Arts.

It is common to divide periods of the evolution of Philippine Arts into the usual
historical periods – from pre-historic or pre-colonial times, to the period of Islamic
dominance in the southern part of the archipelago now Mindanao, followed by the Spanish
colonial period which was strongest in the Luzon and Visayas areas, next was the American
colonial period, then briefly the Japanese occupation, the return of the Americans until
political independence of the Philippines, the post-war period up to the modern times.
Through these historical periods, the different art genres and forms evolved with diverse
influences coming from the dominant political forces.
