 INTRODUCTION
Storage devices are one of the core components of any computing device.
They store virtually all of the data and applications on a computer, except for hardware
firmware which is generally managed through separate read-only memory or ROM.

 STORAGE DEVICES
Storage devices are one of the core components of any computing
device. They store virtually all of the data and applications on a computer, except for
hardware firmware which is generally managed through separate read-only memory or ROM.
Storage devices are available in different forms, depending on the type of underlying device.
For example, a standard computer has multiple storage devices including RAM, a cache, and
a hard disk. The same device may also have optical disk drives and externally connected USB
drives.
There are two different types of storage devices:

1. PRIMARY STORAGE DEVICES

Generally smaller in size, primary storage devices are designed to hold data
temporarily and are internal to the computer. They have the fastest data access speed. These
types of devices include RAM and cache memory.

2. SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES

Secondary storage devices usually have larger storage capacity, and they
store data permanently. They can be either internal or external to the computer. These types
of devices include the hard disk, the optical disk drive and USB storage device.

 PRIMARY MEMORY
1. CACHE
cache memory, also called cache, supplementary memory system that
temporarily stores frequently used instructions and data for quicker processing by the central
processing unit (CPU) of a computer.
2. MAIN MEMORY
Main memory is where programs and data are kept when the processor is
actively using them. When programs and data become active, they are copied from secondary
memory into main memory where the processor can interact with them. A copy remains in
secondary memory. Its types are:
 RAM
 ROM
3. REGISTER
Register memory is the smallest and fastest memory in a computer. It is not
a part of the main memory and is located in the CPU in the form of registers, which are the
smallest data holding elements. A register temporarily holds frequently used data,
instructions, and memory address that are to be used by CPU.

 SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES
1. MAGNETIC STORAGE DEVICES
Magnetic storage devices can be performed read/write activities very easily.
Hard disks, zip disks and floppy disks are common examples of magnetic disks. It is covered
with a magnetic coating and stores data in the form of tracks, spots and sectors. A magnetic
disk is a storage device that uses a magnetization process to write, rewrite and access data.
2. OPTICAL STORAGE DEVICES
Optical storage uses a laser to store and retrieve data from optical media.
It uses low-power laser beams to record and retrieve digital data. Compact disc and DVD are
examples of optical media.
3. SOLID-STATE STORAGE DEVICES
Solid-state storage (SSS) is a type of computer storage media that stores data
electronically and has no moving parts. Solid state storage is made from silicon microchips.
Because there are no moving parts, SSDs require less power and produce far less heat than
spinning hard disk drives or magnetic tape.

 CONCLUSION
Computer storage devices are used to store huge amounts of data and
information permanently. If you want any of your data kept safe and lastingly, then your
choice should be these devices.. Computer storage devices are a must for an individual or
organization to keep data and information in a reliable and permanent way. When your
computer fails to work (it can happen anytime), your files will be kept safe on secondary
storage devices. That is the beauty of these devices
