Lafkada

Lefkada is an island in Greece, and the island's capital is the only city there named Lefkada. The
population numbers 13 000 and is mainly engaged in tourism and agriculture.

Buildings in the capital are constructed in typical anti-earthquake architecture using wood, stone and
other materials. The city plan was created during the time when the island was a Venetian
possession. In the capital are the famous churches of Saint Spyridon and Saint Mina. The city is a
wonderful blend of Venetian culture and Greek lifestyle. Everywhere there are small streets between
the houses where you can get lost if you don't know the city.

Many tourists and sailing enthusiasts are attracted because of the beautiful beaches and blue sea.
Some of the most famous beaches there are Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Nidri, Katisma, Gialos, Mikros
Gialos, Pefkoulia, Milos and Amuso. Most of the beaches on the island are rocky and have small
pebbles instead of sand that make up the beach.

If you are hungry, in Lefkada there are restaurants, cafes, pastry shops and various shops for Greek
marshmallows and other traditional sweets. In the town centre, right by the sea, there are many
restaurants serving traditional and not so traditional food. In them you can order gyros, which is very
similar to duneros but a bit different, another thing you can order is souvlaki, grilled octopus, fried
squid, boiled mussels with sauce and all kinds of other seafood, but also if you wish you can order, the
most ordinary pizza or pasta.

For a place to stay in Lefkada there are plenty of places. Almost everywhere there are hotels and
guesthouses, some expensive and others cheap. You can stay either in the city centre or on the
outskirts of the island, where it is more peaceful and you can enjoy the sea view from the hotel you
are staying in.

During the summer, day cruises are organised to take tourists around the more inaccessible beaches
of Lefkada and around the neighbouring islands of Ithaca, Kefalonia and Scorpio. The cruise takes a
full day, so you should take a day out of your holiday for the short boat trip if you've decided to
explore Lefkada and the neighbouring islands.

For those who like to shop, Lefkada has many different shops. All around the centre you can find
shops for various souvenirs, colourful clothes, lovely jewellery and bookshops with many books in
Greek and English.
