The rhythm of the tidal zone

Because of the force of the moon and sun, the ocean occurs tidal phenomenon.

The intertidal zone refers to the coastal zone between the highest tide line and the lowest tide
line.

There are some characteristics

1. High biological productivity

Intertidal zone is a place between ocean and the land. It has accumulated the energy both from
land and ocean.
The primary producers of the intertidal zone are not only plankton, abundant algae and Marine
plants but a lot of organic material and terrestrial species from the land. Thus, although the
natural conditions of the intertidal zone are harsher than those of the ocean, its productivity
exceeds that of the ocean.

2. The intertidal zone is a community or habitat of many Marine organisms

Many intertidal species show near-tidal rhythms, including algae, fish, and reptiles.
This zone is submerged in sea water at high tide and exposed to air at low tide, which is affected
by both land and sea. This rapidly changing living environment makes the intertidal species have
typical amphibious characteristics. What is more The physiology and behavior of intertidal
animals are generally rhythmical, which reflects tides.

For example, Calling crabs hide in the sand when the tide comes. when the tide goes out, they
come out again.
Fiddler crabs have been living by the sea for generations and have gradually developed
their own internal clock in response to the changing tides. Its color will turn dark during
the day and turn light at night.  Its internal biological clock follows the ocean tide.

American scientists put it in a dark room where there was no day or night and no tide. After
several weeks of observation and recording, they found that the color pattern of fiddler crabs was
still the same as on the beach. This experiment shows that fiddler crabs live according to their
biological clock even when there are no tides. The scientists then moved the fiddler crabs from
the east coast of the United States to the West Coast in dark containers, the crabs change their
biological clock and follow the new ocean tide schedule.

So, I am interesting in this kind of animals that follows special rhythm.

seasonal variation and succession of communities are also the contents of intertidal ecology.
