Operating System (OS)

An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware, software
resources, and provides common services for computer programs.

Commonly used Operating Systems (OS) for Desktops and Tablets

Windows 7 Android Free BSD

Windows 8 macOS(OS X) Fedora
Windows 10 iOS Linux
Chrome OS Ubuntu

1
Server
The server has a broader scope than the operating system. The server handles the administrative
group related activities on a network. It basically stores, recover and send the files to all the
devices that are connected to the network of that server

Windows Server
Windows Server is a brand name for a group of server operating systems released by Microsoft.
It includes all Windows operating systems that are branded "Windows Server", but not any
other Microsoft product.

GUI
A GUI (graphical user interface) is a system of interactive visual components for computer
software. A GUI displays objects that convey information and represent actions that can be
taken by the user. The objects change color, size, or visibility when the user interacts with
them.

Differences between the Windows OS and Windows Server

1. Higher memory support
2. Effective use of hardware
3. Supports more network connections
4. Very good background and foreground task priority
5. Higher Cost
6. No extraneous features

VI. ADDITIONAL READINGS

Differences between Windows OS and Windows Server

1. Memory support is one of the key differences between the two. Windows server supports
more memory than windows operating system. Different versions of the windows server have
a distinct memory limit. You can find out the specification from the official site

2. The end-user of windows servers are usually large companies or enterprises as compared to
the Windows operating system whose end users are typically home-based desktops or small
businesses. That’s why the windows server uses its hardware, especially its CPU, very
effectively. If you use the Windows server, you are using your equipment at its full potential.

3. Windows operating system can only handle up to 10 or 20 connections, but windows server
has a much higher number in that regard. Some servers can handle up to 65535 connections.

4. Windows servers are designed to prioritize tasks that are being performed in the background
as compared to the functions that are being performed on the foreground. In the Windows

9
operating system by default, foreground activities are given priority. Although the priority can
be changed according to your needs, still, the performance difference between the two is
significant.

5. The most obvious difference is the cost. Windows operating system is not as expensive as
the Windows server. Windows server’s license can cost from 500 to 6200$. It is, in fact,
designed for businesses and is priced accordingly.

6. Windows server does not indulge in the features which compromise its energy. Obviously,
it is designed for professional organizations. For example, Microsoft Edge and Microsoft store
cannot be seen in the windows server.

Questions to answer: Write your answers to the provided answer sheet. (10pts)

1. What are Windows Servers designed to prioritize?

2. What is a key difference between Windows Server and Windows OS?
3. What is the most obvious difference between Windows Server and Widows OS?
4. What are the limitations of Windows Operating systems in terms of connections they can
handle?
5. Why are large companies and enterprises the usual end-users of Windows Servers?
