CANDELA HYPAR DIARGRIDSHELLS

Anticlastic 3D Hypar Surface - Superficies Alabeadas en 3D

A physicalization conceptual model of a hybrid facade anticlastic modular surface has been built to demonstrate the
viability to use the concept of doubly ruled set of straight lines within three parabolic boundary curves to create facades
that can be built using mostly segmental straight lines, here corrugated plastic sheets have been fitted within the sets of
straight lines made of round wooden sticks in two layers. The overall surface is anticlastic (superficie alabeada) and the
segments of corrugated plastic can adjust well within the boundaries of straight lines ..... The three edge curves are
parabolic and the straight lines parametrization follows the
concept of Candela Vaulted Shells ..... upward parabolic curve with N=6 segments, horizontal plane parabolic curve with
2*N=12 segments and diagonal inclined parabolic curve with 3*N=18 segments .....

The hybrid model in the video was built based upon the concept that was developed by Felix Candela and that was
published by the ACI in the Journal issue of October 1960. In that paper by Candela he shows in Figure 8 his method to
layout the two sets of straight lines to create the Hyperbolic Paraboloid Surface of two intersecting Groined Vaults ....
here Candela left us a hint on how to build the GridShell Formwork within three parabolic boundary curves .... in the
octopartite modular surface he used 5 segments along one parabolic curve, 10 segments along a second parabolic curve,
and 15 segments along the diagonally inclined parabolic curve .... the two sets of straight lines intersect each other in a
3D hypar surface and can be seen in the plan and elevation views of Fig. 8 below ..... this could be an interesting
challenge for Rhino-Grasshopper fans to recreate this modular groined vaulted model ..... Here is a ROOF there is a
WALL FACADE !!! .....
