Adjective phrase meaning

Adjective phrase is a series of words in which the Head in the form of Adjective and Modifier in the
form of Determiner, Qualifier, and Classifier In its use, adjective phrase serves as an adjective that
describes Noun or Pronoun in sentences, and its position in the sentence can be placed before or after
Noun, but not all adjectives can occupy these two positions.

The Adjective Phrase formula is as follows:

Example of Adjective phrase:

 Dadang is from Sukabumi.


 He is from Sukabumi.

The boldest in the example sentence above is the Adjective Phrase. In the first sentence, Adjective
Phrase From Sukabumi describes the Subject in the form of Noun namely "Dadang". Meanwhile, in
the second sentence, Adjective Phrase From Sukabumi describes the subject in the form of Pronoun,
namely "He".

Types of Adjective Phrases

Adjective phrases have two forms that are distinguished by their position in sentences, both of which
are:

1. Attributive Adjective

Attributive Adjective is an adjective phrase used to describe a noun, its position is before the noun
described to form a noun phrase. The main characteristic of this adjective phrase is that it appears in
the noun phrase.

Examples of Attributive Adjective Phrases:

A man proud of his families.


2. Predicative Adjective

The opposite of Attributive, Predicative Adjective is an adjective phrase that serves as a predicate, its
position is after linking verbs and does not serve to describe nouns.

Examples of Predicative Adjective Phrase Sentences:

Her hair is very beautiful.

3. Prepositional Phrase as Adjective Phrase

Adjective phrases often come from the prepositional form of phrase. Preposition is a word that
describes the relationship of Noun or Pronoun with other words in a sentence, in other words
prepositional and adjective phrase has the same function to describe Noun and Pronoun.

Prepositional phrases in sentences can serve as Noun, Adjecti or Adverb. When a prepositional phrase
serves as an adjective phrase, then this phrase gives us additional information about the noun or
pronoun in a sentence like Which? What kind? and How Much?.

To determine if a prepositional phrase is an Adjective Phrase, then the things you should pay attention
to are as follows:

 Find object of preposition in the phrase, form in the form of noun or pronoun that
follows Preposition.
 Recognize other words related to noun or pronoun through Preposition.
 Know the class of words described by the prepositional phrase, if it is Noun or
Pronoun then the prepositional phrase is also an adjective phrase.

Examples of Prepositional Phrase Sentences That Serve as Adjective phrases:

The magazine on the table is mine.

And if we analyze one sentence at a time above, the result is as follows:

 The bold word in the example sentence above is Prepositional Phrase.


 Object of Prepositionnya is Table.
 The preposition is On which describes the relationship between Table and Magazine.
 The word class of Magazine is Noun, hence this prepositional phrase is also as adjective
phrase.

Another example:

The announcement during workshop interrupted our discussion.

And if we analyze one by one the components of the sentence forming above, then the results
obtained are:

 The bold word above is Prepositional Phrase.


 Object of Preposition of the above phrase is Workshop.
 Preposition During explains to us the relationship between the Workshop and the
Announcement.
 The word class rather than Announcement is Noun, so this prepositional phrase also serves as
an Adjective Phrase.
