Observations
Today we had our weekly 9th grade academy meeting which was led by our 9 th grade academy
assistant principal. During these meetings, teachers typically discuss their experience in the classroom,
In attendance to this meeting there were all 9th grade teachers (which included any teacher that
taught a 9th grade class) as well as the assistant principal, school-based teacher leader, as well as the
principal at Randolph.

During the meeting the assistant principal began with a nice icebreaker asking everyone to type in the
chat “what season they enjoy”. After the quick opening, we delved right into the MTSS Student
Tracker Google Sheet.

MTSS is short for Pennsylvania’s Multi-Tiered System of Support, which is a school improvement
framework that enhances academic, behavioral, and social emotional outcomes for all students. At
Randolph this means tracking students and listing them down if they have been showing consistent
misbehavior or are academically low achieving. Our Assistant Principal, Ms. Stanley, went around
asking every teacher to share at least 1 student, in the call. During each share, other teachers would
also offer their insight and encounter with that student; what worked with them in the classroom and
what did not. In addition, for a few students that were named, certain teachers provided more
background depth into the hardships that the students are facing at home.

Although we did not get through all the teachers by the time the meeting ended, Ms. Stanley ask that
we continue to update the Google Sheet, detailing not only the student’s name, but also what areas
(academic or behavioral) that could be improved, and what plans of action are the teachers taking.

Reflections
As an observer, I saw that the zoom meeting was large with at least 10 teachers of various subject
areas and 3 to 4 admins in attendance.
During the ice breaker, we would usually share our thoughts vocally in the call, but this time, due to
the large attendance, Ms. Stanley shifted to reading comments off the zoom chat; which I found very
apt for the situation given how it would’ve probably taken up too much time for everyone to share
their favorite season in a 30 minute block meeting.
Once we delve into the MTSS tracker Google Sheet, I saw a lot of collaboration and community
building occurring within such a short period of time. From one teacher sharing about student
misbehaviors to another describing and offering advice on how to approach said student in a way that
have worked effectively in the past. It was quite an eye-opening experience to see all these teachers,
who are experts in their own subject area, come together to unravel the mystery how to engage the
student in a more meaningful way.
