A wide range of works which showed the spread of yokai culture was collected in these books: pieture scrolls. nishiki-e, hanpon (woodblock printed books). kimono, netsuke, x70, and toys, selected from a diverse collection of yokai materials acquired over the course of thirty-odd years Fortunately, these two books met with a huge response, and quite afew requests to see more of the materials. There were also many requests for a more complete picture ofthe books, such as the woodblock printed hanpon, of which only a small part had been shown. The support from the fans who love yokai led to the publication ofthis book. Jn this book are the hanpon Bakemono, the hanpon One Hundred Monster Poems by One Hundred Poets, the hand-drawn book The Book of Faces (previously featured in Yokat Wonderland), the hanpon Monster Pieture Book, the yellov-covered storybook Deep Mountain Grass: A New Tale of Bakemono, and three minianure books (mamehon): ‘The Twelve Months of Bakemono, Kintoki Defeats Bakemono, and Bakemono (previously fearured in Fokat Museum), Chapter 1:'The Bountiful Yokai of the Edo and Meiji Periods fearures books other than The Book of Faces (/inmen Zosha), Bakcmono isan amusing portrayal ofall sorts of household-object yokai ‘swarming over startled humans, while One Hundred Monster Poems by One Hundred Poetsis a parody ‘on the Oguraa My aku Tsshu with yokai poems ssccompanied by illustrations. Deep Mountain Grass: A ‘New Tale of Bakemono (Miyamagnsa Bakemono ‘Shin'oa) is one ofthese. Inaddition, three miniature ‘books (mamehon) are included; in consideration of the emerging research on yokai mamehon all pages are provided, with some shown at actual size. These assorted yokai books are nor as well known asthe Gazi Hyakkt Yagyo 0 Ehon Hyak Monogatari (Night Stories of Tosanjin), but each has unique take on yokai, and their variety shows the full scope of the field of hanpon supporting yokai culture. Chapter 2: The Fantastic World of the Unique Book of Faces features the hand-drawn book The Book of Faces Vininen Zasha). Nother books of this kind have been identified. When this work was presented for the firsttime in Fokae Wonderlarad, along withthe popularity ofits quirky, lovable and full-checked characters came many positive responses. Although twenty pages of large pictures ‘were devoted to itin that book, there were many requests for the publication ofthe full content; in response ithas een featured once more, with a ‘reproduction ofthe fulltext accompanying the pictures.
