Discussion

The environment affects our health in a variety of ways. If we live in an unclean environment, there is a high
possibility that we can get diseases from it. In living a healthy life is living in a healthy environment. Maintaining
cleanliness is the essential part of healthy living because it is the cleanliness only which helps to improve our
personality by keeping clean externally and internally.

It is everybody’s responsibility and one should keep themselves and their surroundings clean and hygienic. It
also brings good and positive thoughts in the mind which slows down the occurrence of diseases.

Characteristics of a Healthy Environment

Being healthy is a big umbrella that cares of other things such as – physical, mental, emotional, social, and
spiritual – underneath its shade. With all these aspects taken care of by any school in partnership with the
community, there is no excuse why a child wouldn’t grow up to be a healthy, worthwhile individual in any society.
 Physical Environment
 Wide, open spaces – children are basically playful and adventurous. They love walking, jumping
and other kinds of movement. Wide and open space offer movements to play, exercise, dance
and other activities.
 Good air and water quality – air safety is the concern of the environmentalist and many people.
Air safety means air that is pollution-free.
 Aesthetically pleasing – aesthetic refers to beauty. Beautiful schools attract enrollees. Schools
should have wide, airy classrooms to make learning conducive for everyone.
 Psychosocial Environment

Health 6 | Page 3 of 7
 Healthy interpersonal relations – refers to the interpersonal relationship in the school. The
principal, teachers, canteen helpers, cleaning personnel, office clerks, health personnel and other
pupils are there to be with you every day. Each one must have a healthy working relationship to
make a successful school.
 Free from abuse and discriminations – according to researchers and psychologists, the
rampant use and too much exposure to technologies and the use of social media motivates
youngsters to think of bullying. Children must be guided by parents and other adults in using
internet and other media accounts because children feel that they have the freedom to express
whatever they want to say. The school management must also be vigilant to find out and observe
any bullying acts happening in their school premises. Any discrimination, physical, mental, or
emotional should not be experienced by any child. Bullies must be reported to school authorities.

What is a healthy home?

A healthy home is one that is planned, built, renovated, and maintained in ways that support the health of
residents—children and adults.

Here are the features of a healthy home:

 Dry
Dry homes are less likely to have mold and mildew, which can irritate the nose and throat, cause
coughing and congestion, and set off asthma attacks in some people. Dry homes are also less likely to
have pests like rats and roaches.

 Clean
Clean homes have fewer pests (like bugs and mice), which can trigger asthma attacks, and fewer
contaminants, such as dangerous chemicals like lead.

 Free of pests
Pests like mice, rats, and roaches can carry disease and trigger asthma attacks. In addition, many of the
strong pesticides used to kill them are dangerous, especially for young children.

 Well-ventilated
Well-ventilated homes have healthier, cleaner air, and people generally have fewer breathing problems.

 Free of dangerous chemicals

Many homes contain dangerous chemicals (such as lead and tobacco smoke), unsafe household
cleaners, and bug sprays. Avoiding exposure to these contaminants protects children from dangerous
effects.

 Safe
Safe homes help children avoid accidents and injuries from falls, burns, and poisoning.

 Well-maintained
Well-maintained homes help children avoid dangerous lead, mold and mildew, and accidents.

Identification and Separation of Waste

Segregate your waste and live healthily. All households should know that the following ways will lead to a
zero-waste community. Let us practice segregation.
1. Biodegradable – these are the waste that can be decomposed by bacteria and other living organisms.

Papers – are best recycled to turn into new papers.

Kitchen waste – these are vegetable cuttings and peels, fruit wastes, and rotten fruits. They can
be turned into composts which are very good for garden plants.
 Yard Cuttings – these are wastes that are generated from the garden, lawn, or backyard. Yard
cuttings come in different forms such as leaves, grass, trimmings, cut branches, and pulled
weeds.
2. Non-biodegradable – are materials that do not decay. These materials can be further classified into:

Recyclables – materials that can be returned to factories for recycling. Glass and cans are
examples of recyclable materials. Some types of plastics such as shampoo bottles, oil containers,
and other types of hard plastics can also be recycled. Cans and bottles can also be used to make
pretty works of art.
 Residuals – single-use disposable items that cannot be recycled anymore. Examples of residual
are plastic bags, junk foods wrapper, sachets, plastic packaging, plastic wrappers and Styrofoam.
3. Hazardous Wastes – these are wastes that are dangerous or harmful to human health and environment.
Hazardous wastes ca be solid, liquid, or contained gases.
 Chemicals – are natural or artificial substance consisting of matter in any liquid, solid, or gas
forms.
 Used batteries
 Expired medicines

Proper Waste Management

Proper waste management includes reducing wastes before it is created and making sure that
there is a system to collect, separate, transport, store, compost, and recycle discards.
An effective waste management program recognizes and respects the role and contribution of the
waste workers who handle the difficult and dangerous job of collecting and transporting our wastes.

How do we lessen our waste?

1. Waste Reduction – refers to reducing the amount of waste produced.
Here are some ways to reduce waste.
 Think carefully before you buy anything. Is this a need or a want?
 Bring reusable bags when shopping or traveling to avoid using plastic bags.
 Choose products that are returnable, reusable, or refillable over single-use items.
 Avoid individually wrapped items, snack packs, and single-serve containers. Buy in bulk to
minimize food wrappers.
 Compost food scraps and yard wastes.
 Purchase items such as dish soap and laundry detergents in concentrate forms. Diluting them
with water will save us a few pesos.
2. Waste Storage – keeping the waste or trash in a container for a limited period. Waste must be
properly segregated or separated into different types:
 Biodegradable
 Recyclable
 Residuals
 Hazardous
 Special wastes

Health 6 | Page 6 of 7
3. Waste Disposal – final disposal of wastes that cannot be recycled or composted.

Performance Task 2.2 – How Can I Reuse them?

I. Objective:
 To be able to share that some non-biodegradable materials can still be reused
II. Materials:
 MS Word/Google docs
 Pictures
III. Procedures:
1. Here are some non-biodegradable materials. How can you reuse them? Think of a specific way to make each
non-biodegradable material functional again.
 Bottle caps
 Bottle of wine
 Mineral bottles
 Milk/sardines cans
 Plastic spoons/forks
2. Provide a picture for each material.
3. Use MS Word/Google docs in making the activity.
4. Submit your output to my email: ycongapeh6@gmail.com.
5. Indicate proper file name. (Full name_PETA No.:Title)
6. Leave a message to the activity resource so that it will be marked complete.
