Course Description

This course provides topics on terms and definition of TEFL, current issues in ELT, various methods,
approaches, and techniques for TEFL, current methods of teaching and learning, and principles of
teaching English as a Foreign Language in teaching language skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and
writing) and language components (pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary). Students not only learn the
concept of basic terms in TEFL and its principles, but they also learn how to practice the principles
correctly and effectively in microteaching or mini lesson practices with peers. Thus, they are able to apply
these theoretical and practical knowledge next when they have preservice teacher program.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, the students are expected to have sufficient skills and knowledge of
the principles and techniques of teaching and learning process relevant to their future job as
teachers of EFL in Indonesia.

Activities

Online lectures and classroom activities aim at making students familiar with numerous views of TEFL. In a
lecture, the lecturer introduces and provides a general idea of the topic of the day. The topics comprise
numerous views of TEFL which start from terms and definition of TEFL, current issues in ELT, various
methods, approaches, and techniques for TEFL, current methods of teaching and learning, and principles
of teaching English as a Foreign Language in teaching language skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and
writing) and language components (pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary). Before attending lectures,
students are required to read the materials as a preparation for online lectures and classroom activities.
Following lectures, students will be given online classroom activities (individual/ pair/ group presentation/
?discussion or assignments), it is designed to boost students’ knowledge and ability on problems of TEFL.
The course will encompass specific facilitator inputs (e.g. lecture presentations), combined with a variety
of interactive learning activities, including:
 Structured group work
 Group and individual reflection
 Self-study and writing
 Plenary discussions

Assignment

Assignment is given along with the lecture to enable students to apply knowledge and ability of TEFL
materials. The following are some tasks students need to encounter:
Task 1: Construct good Paper
Task 2: Group presentation
Task 3: Individual mini lesson
Task 4: Classroom discussion
Task 5: Individual review / summary / response / feedback / reflection
Task 6: Individual review on TEFL article
Task 7: Individual TEFL method construction
Task 8: Idividual reading TEFL articles and books
Note:
- Paper is structured from at least five references ( books and journals)
- The paper is written in between 3000 -5000 words
- Footnote or in/body note can be alternative
- Type every work in Times New Roman, 1.5 space & A4-size paper, and give page number right-
bottom of the page.

Evaluation

Students’ grade will be determined on the basis of regular attendance as well as participation in
classroom discussion and performance (25%), students’ work (20%), students’ mid-term test (25%), and
final examination (30%). The final examination will be given in form of test and project.

point presentations and audio/ video materials are used to give more insights on the topics (for
the lecturer’s personal use only).

Recommendation
To deepen students’ understanding of materials given in TEFL class, students are recommended to
use or collect another TEFL books which has the similar topics to the materials given.
