The address components in India are slightly different than those in the Global res fro

Guidelines. The hierarchy of the address components is explained in the examples al
below.
There are two main addressing systems in India, Co-ordinate and Subset.
Co-ordinate system: Street Number and Street Name can be considered as X, Y co-
ordinates respectively. The exact location within a Sub locality, Locality, and State can
be determined based on these two components.
Subset system: This is the most commonly used system in India. A Street name is not
always a part of the Indian address system. This is replaced by sub localities (Sub
locality 1 and Sub Locality 2). The components defined in this type can be compared
with Set Theory, where A is the larger set, B is a subset of A, C is a subset of B and there
is a point defined within C which is the Street Number.

Sub localities are common in the Indian address system and are important because
often times Street name is not listed in an address and two levels of Sub localities are
used instead. Refer to Section 1 ‘Address system in India’ (Subset System).
There are two types of Sub localities, Sub locality 1 and Sub locality 2.
• Sub locality 2 is a sub division of Sub locality 1.It is listed after Street and before
Sub locality 1 in the address hierarchy. There are many types of Sub locality 2
