AutoWAVE Programming Instructions
This document provides instructions as to how to program radio operation mode, network
identification, and data rate. The AutoWAVE can be programmed for point-to-point or point-to-
multipoint communication. Point-to-point communication consists of two AutoWAVE radios, with
one radio configured as master and one as slave. Whereas, point-to-multipoint communication is
consist of one radio configured as master and multiple radios configured as slave.

In point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communication, slave radio identifies and responses only to

the master radio who ID is programmed into its Call Book. Users may select the Network ID
method over Call Book identification method for point-to-multipoint communication. With the
Network ID selection, radios within a network are programmed with a same ID number, and will
response to any master radios having the same network ID number. The benefit of the Network
ID is that radio Call Books do not have to modify when master radio in a network is replaced.
When interface with terminal devices such as flow computer or desk top computer, the data rate
must be set to match up between the terminal device and the radio.

The AutoWAVE can also be configured as repeater to extend a communication link between
master and slave radios. Other radio parameters such as data package, RF data rate, RF
transmit power may be optimized to increase data throughput or to solidify the RF link. The
information is detailed with explanations in the AutoWAVE manual. Users are encouraged to
study the manual before making changes to the radio parameters.

Programming the radio is done through RS232 serial interface. The setup equipments are listed as
follows:
• The AutoWAVE Programming Cable, part number 3-0479-035
• +12 VDC power supply
• Desktop or portable personal computer (PC) with a serial port, and a terminal program such
as Procomm or Windows Hyper Terminal program.

Programming Procedure:

WARNING:
ENSURE THE AREA IS NONHAZARDOUS BEFORE
CONNECTING TO OR DISCONNECTING THE
POWER SUPPLY FROM THE AUTOWAVE RADIO.

• Connect programming cable DB9 connector to PC serial port, 10-position connector to the
AutoWAVE.
• Connect power to the radio by connecting red wire (position 1 on radio connector) to +12 VDC
power supply, black wire (position 4 on radio connector) to power supply ground.
• Run terminal program. Select PC serial port where the AutoWAVE connected to, and set
communication protocol to N 8 1, Hardware Control = none, 19200 Baud.
• Press the push button on the programming cable to activate the AutoWAVE programming
MAIN MENU.

A. Point-to-Point communication:
• From the MAIN MENU, select option (0) to set the operation mode for the radio. From the SET
MODEM MODE menu, enter (0) for point-to-point master radio, or (1) for point-to-point slave
radio. Press ESC key to go back to the MAIN MENU.
• Select option (1) to set the communication baud rate. Note that this setting must match flow
computer communication baud rate, or any communication or terminal device connected to the
radio. When finished, press ESC key to go back to the MAIN MENU.
• Select option (2) to EDIT CALL BOOK. Enter master radio ID into the slave call book, and
Slave radio ID into master call book. Radio ID can be found on the radio. Press ESC to go
back to MAIN MENU when finished. It is important that the radio ID is entered into entry (0) of
the MODEM CALL BOOK menu.

WARNING:
Do not change parameters without reading manual

This completes the programming for point-to-point communication.

B. Point-to-Multipoint communication:
• From the MAIN MENU, select option (0) to set the operation mode for radio. From the SET
MODEM MODE menu, enter (2) for point-to-multipoint master radio, or (3) for point-to-
multipoint slave radio. Press ESC key to go back to the MAIN MENU.
• Select option (1) to set the communication baud rate. Note that this setting must match flow
computer communication baud rate or any communication or terminal device that is connected
to radio. When finished, press ESC key to go back to the MAIN MENU.
• Network Identification: select one of the two methods below for network identification.
• Call Book Setup: select option (2) EDIT CALL BOOK. Enter point-to-multipoint master
radio ID into each of Point-to-Multipoint slave radio call book in a network. Do not enter
point-to-multipoint slave radio ID into point-to-multipoint master radio call book. It is
important that the radio ID entered into slave radio call book is in sequential starting with
entry (0). Press ESC to go back to MAIN MENU. Select option (5) EDIT MULTIPOINT
PARAMETERS from the MAIN MENU. Select option (6) Network ID. Enter ID number 255
to disable Network ID method. Press ESC to go back to the MAIN MENU.

This completes the programming for point-to-multipoint communication.

1
This parameter is always set in the master radio. The slave radio may not need to enable this option. When enabled the
signal is inserted to bring the Flow Computer out of ‘sleeping’ mode.
