What role does self-care play in the helping profession-understanding attrition in the social work
field?

Self-care is a complicated concept that is explored and assessed by various disciplines,

each of which investigates and evaluates Self-care from a unique perspective and hence in

multiple ways. Some of these discrepancies may explain by disparities in working conditions and

levels of effort among professionals in a single discipline's profession and differences across

occupations and professions. According to Hoy and colleagues, perspectives from the medical,

social, nursing, psychological, and public health fields may be valuable in understanding self-

care (2007).

It first gained popularity in the medical field in the 1970s, and it is most often used to

refer to sickness treatment. When it comes to aiding patients in developing their abilities and

skills, care delivers to assist them in becoming more self-sufficient. A more straightforward way

to phrase it is to bring the individual as near to self-sufficiency as possible as fast as is

reasonably achievable. Dorothea Oremová has been a trailblazer in medicine and nursing, having

established the concept of self-care insufficiency in the process. According to this concept, a lack

of care happens when an individual's desire for Self-care exceeds their actual capacity to care for

themselves in the given situation. According to the sociological viewpoint, social support, the

social environment, and social interactions cannot overstate. In nursing, self-care define as the

patient's ability to do core self-care and everyday living. Self-care is concerned with the person's

inner workings and the underlying causes and events from a psychological standpoint.

On the other hand, psychology views self-care as including a person's psychological wellbeing,

self-awareness, and other cognitive processes, amongst other things. In the field of public health,

risk factors may recognize and avoid. Although the individual components of social work

(supervision, training, and lifelong learning) constitute part of professional performance or

training for it in Slovakia, the concept of hiring social workers has not yet established. It's not

functional when it use with it.

In general, the term "self-care" use in several contexts, and it is an essential part of one's

daily routine. The ability to look for one's own needs daily is considered a fundamental human

characteristic. "Self-care" is defined as a person's day-to-day responsibility for their subjective

wellbeing and the ability to seek assistance when necessary. According to Rigins (1995), this

results in a reduction in the use of health-care services. And an increase in the person's ability to

manage their wellbeing. A set of acts that individuals participate in to sustain their health,

wellbeing, and quality of life is defined as "Self-care", according to Kumar (2007). In addition,

Lee and Miller (2013) believe that self-care may be used as a tool for empowerment, enabling,

for example, personnel in the helping professions to actively and deliberately engage in their

health, wellbeing, and resilience to adversity and stress. (Dušan Šlosár)

Both social workers and their clients may suffer from burnout and compassion fatigue,

which may be detrimental to their wellbeing. A social worker can't provide good care for others

if they do not care for themselves first. Social workers know to prioritize others, assuming that

they will eat after everyone else has finished their meal when it comes to their personal needs.

attack." Her philosophy is, "The more I have, the more I have to contribute." It helps me to be

more open to sharing good things with people when I'm healthy, calm, adequately nourished, and

in a peaceful environment. If I'm groaning, moaning, or otherwise feeling exhausted, I don't have

much to offer the conversation." Social workers, she argues, "have a moral and ethical duty to

stay healthy and fit" to serve the world successfully they call to do. (How Social Workers Can

Prioritize Self-Care in High-Stress Working Environments)

According to Hydon, self-care starts with recognizing the pressures in your life and

analyzing the physical, emotional, and behavioural consequences these stressors have on your

overall health and wellbeing. He went on to say that it's conceivable for a practitioner to pick up

on a client's trauma without the client even realizing it's happening. You may have irritability,

sleep problems, and avoidance methods due to this disease. Social services and mental health

care professionals seek to promote the wellbeing of others and to guarantee that every person's

essential human needs are met. That is one of their key goals. A vast majority of social work

roles focus primarily on addressing the needs of underserved people in society. It is typical in

these occupations to have stress and burnout since they deal with trauma daily, which puts them

at risk. However, since social work and mental health therapy are both service-oriented

occupations, practitioners' own mental health needs are often unfulfilled as a result.

Consequently, many social workers are under constant pressure to "always be on." As a

result, they may neglect their mental health due to inadequate support structures within their

organizations. Steve Hydon, a clinical professor of field education, spoke on the most common

types and causes of stress that social service workers encounter and fundamental

recommendations for decreasing stress and improving mental health. (The Importance of Self-

Care for Social Workers)

For social work students, several duties are necessary, which are usually completes

simultaneously and may challenge them to operate outside their comfort zones. Many courses

require students to research and analyze real-world social work situations where social work

service consumers have experienced substantial trauma, abuse, or discrimination. Social work

students are assessed regularly on their ability to apply the skills, facts, and values they have

gained via case studies and role-playing to the demands of their professional employment.

Because of this, students are exposed to the difficulties that service users encounter due to the

many ways in they have excluded. Each session included a social work practise role-playing

exercise as well as a discussion. As a result, they could put their newly gained understanding of

social work practise into action right away. As the first MBP to do so, this programme uses

social work role-plays and mindfulness-based theory and practises, making it the first of its kind.

In addition, the author is aware of no other MBPs who have accomplished this feat, making this

a noteworthy achievement.(Jackson)
