Globalization is an economic, social, cultural, and political phenomenon. It is


defined as the mobility across borders of goods and services, people, capital and
knowledge. I realized that the world economy has become much more integrated,
interdependent and intertwined in the years. This also appears to be a trend and an
opportunity to some, especially for businesses, investors and workers. It is considered to
stimulate the strong growth and significant poverty reduction in recent decades in the
Philippines.

There are two good edges I realized about global citizenship education. First, it is
transformative. It focuses on self-reflection and awareness, while the words value-
creating denote taking actions in order to create value in society. Second, it is a lifelong
pursuit that involves both formal learning and practical experience. Global citizenship
education helps people of all ages, which I believe is a good thing as well. It only shows
that we should all possess an in-depth understanding about the concept and its
significance.

Global citizenship aims to promote respect cultural, gender, faith and other
differences, become more aware of the world beyond our own, understand our
responsibilities as members of the global community, embrace our roles in protecting our
planet for a sustainable future, and be mindful about how our local actions impact the
greater world.

I did a little more research with The AFS Global Citizenship Education Agenda. I found
out that AFS focuses on six main areas to support the global citizenship education
movement: First, AFS helps the world learn to live together. We should be able to foster
understanding to the differences to build a more just and peaceful connection. Second,
AFSers embrace differences and believe our world is stronger because of them. We
should be able to appreciate the differences and be inclusive in implementing policies
and programs. Third, AFS is committed to expanding the role of young people in
leadership and the decision-making processes of AFS and society at large.

The fourth and fifth area has something to do with education. First, they aim
integrate intercultural learning and global citizenship education into national agendas and
public-school curriculums, along with educators, policy makers and others. Second, they
support global citizenship education and works closely with schools, universities,
humanitarian and peace groups, governments and other NGOs.

Lastly, AFS proactively supports the United Nations Sustainable Development


Goals (SDGs). I believe this is the hardest to achieve, yet the most important, as it is the
"blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all".
