Summary Narrative:
As the election comes nearer, there has been a lot of allegations against data breaching or hacking.
The National Privacy Commission (NPC) issued separate orders to the Commission on Elections
(COMELEC), in a meeting via teleconference on January 25, 2022, there has been an alleged hacking
and data breach incident involving the COMELEC servers. As it is said, there is over 60GB of data
that was taken by a group of hackers. The data involves personal information and sensitive personal
information of the voters. The NPC’s Complaints and Investigation Division commenced its own
independent investigation and issued a notice to COMELEC requiring them to explain the alleged
hacking and data breach. As these allegations occurs, the response of the NPC does not tolerate any
act in violation of the Data Privacy Act including carelessness in implementing organizational,
physical, and technical security measures on personal data processing systems, whether in
government or private institutions.

What lesson have you learned?

Privacy and security is very important especially when we are part of the internet community.
According to the article, even the government data can be hacked, how so of the information that we
put in the internet. Aside from that, our personal information is what makes us be known that is why
we must protect it for others not to use it.

What suggestions can you offer?

For the students and teachers, I would suggest to always read terms and conditions. Check the
website’s reliability before putting in information. Also, be aware that there are hackers and people
who want to use our information for their own pleasure.
For the government, they must also provide watch on their data for hackers can penetrate private
information. Also, improving their internet security will also help not to scare people from a
security breach.
